Federal Impact Aid Survey Federal Impact Aid Survey

Completion is IMPORTANT! Completion is IMPORTANT!

It's that time of year again for the Federal Impact Aid Survey.

The Federal Government owns property in Fairfax County, and those properties are removed from the local tax base. FCPS is eligible to apply for Federal Impact Aid funds as reimbursement for the lost tax revenue.

Federally connected students are:

  • children of active-duty uniformed services personnel,
  • children who live on federal property or in subsidized federal housing, and
  • children whose parents are employed on eligible federal properties.

I encourage you to complete the survey on ParentVUE if you haven't already. The surveys are available online now, and your participation is very important to our school.

For those who are unable to complete the survey online, a printed copy will be sent home with students on November 12th. For more information regarding the Federal Impact Aid Surveys, please visit the following website: Federal Impact Aid Surveys.

It is VITAL that all our families please complete the Federal Aid Survey. The survey will only take a few minutes - but will have a Major impact on the funding we receive at MVHS.

THANK YOU in advance for your participation in the survey. We greatly appreciate it!

Below is the schedule of MVHS Extracurricular Activities for this week.

For a more comprehensive list of activities for the entire school year, click HERE.

Attendance "Tips of the Week" Attendance "Tips of the Week"

  • We especially appreciate everyone’s efforts to avoid taking extra days off during the Thanksgiving holiday.

  • Just a few missed days here and there, even if they’re excused absences, can add up to too much lost learning time and leave your child behind in school.

  • We know it’s tempting to extend your vacation by a few days on either side of the holiday. However, this holiday season, the best gift you can give your child is a good education. And the best place to get that education is in school. Every day. On time.

Attendance Reminders: Attendance Reminders:

Just a few missed days here and there, even if they’re excused absences, can add up to too much lost learning time and put your child behind in school. This is as true in kindergarten as it is in high school.

HOW CAN YOU HELP YOUR CHILD OR TEEN HAVE GOOD ATTENDANCE?

• Talk about the importance of showing up to school every day, make that the expectation.

• Help your child maintain daily routines, such as finishing homework and getting a good night’s sleep.

• Try not to schedule dental and medical appointments during the school day.

• Don’t let your child stay home unless truly sick. Complaints of headaches or stomach aches may be signs of anxiety.

Did you also know...

• Ask for help from school officials, afterschool programs, other parents or community agencies if you’re having trouble getting your child to school

• Looking ahead to the holiday season, if missing school is unavoidable, talk to your children’s teachers in advance to create a plan for making up missed work. But remember, a homework packet cannot make up for the interaction and learning that goes on in the classroom.

And as a reminder...

If your child needs to miss school because of an illness or appointment, you must report the absence to the school.

You may submit information via MountVernonHigh.Attendance@fcps.edu or call us at 703-619-3131. Parents/Caregivers can also submit excused absences in ParentVue.

We appreciate your collaboration in scheduling appointments outside of school hours, when possible.

This past week, our Director of Student Services Ms. Rashida Williams announced to our MVHS Staff that "with a mix of excitement and sadness," she accepted a promotion to Senior Manager, III for School Counseling and College Success with Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS).

Ms. Williams shared with staff "My time at Mount Vernon has been incredibly rewarding. Working alongside such dedicated faculty and staff has been an honor and a privilege. Together, we have created a supportive, welcoming and inclusive environment for our students, and I am incredibly proud of all that we have accomplished. We have collaborated to improve our school's on time Graduation rate, created opportunities for college and career exploration and have supported each other through some very difficult crises and challenging situations. I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to each of you for your collaboration, support, and friendship during my tenure here. I have learned so much from you all, and these experiences have allowed me to grow as a leader and will stay with me for the rest of my career."

Our amazing Marching Majors received a rating of "Superior" at the 2024 Virginia Band & Orchestra State Marching Assessment last Saturday at Patriot High School.

This is the 1st step towards a Virginia State Honor Band, which we will accomplish when we earn a Superior in the Concert assessment in March 2025 ;)

Our Marching Majors has received 12 Virginia State Honors - so we are excited that we are on our way to #13!

Regional Coach of the Year Regional Coach of the Year

MVHS Cheer Coach Courtney Erique was named the Regional Cheer Coach of the Year this past week. This award extends the accomplishments of her work, as she was also named the District Cheer Coach of the Year earlier this fall.

Congratulations to XC Team Congratulations to XC Team

Advancing to Regionals! Advancing to Regionals!

From Our XC Coach...

"Our Majors Cross Country Teams turned in some of the best performances of the past three years...Both the Girls and the Boys squads will advance to the Occoquan Regional Championships next week!

Additionally, we now have THREE (3) All-District XC runners at Mount Vernon, including an Individual Champion!

Our All-District performances began with the Girls race...Senior Natalie Holland led her team in finishing 11th in the approximately 80-runner field. Her finishing time of 20:52 was her best of the season thus far...Junior Lacey Lussier missed All-District honors by a mere 30 seconds...Rounding out the scoring were freshman Miliani Smith (24:19), Audrey Ortiz-Peterson (24:32), and Valeria Ribera (25:03). As previously mentioned, our Girls Team moves on to the next level, so a full team of seven athletes will advance.

In the Boys National District Championship event, senior Addison Brooks ran a tactically superb race and dominated the field. His 15:17 continued his string of phenomenal performances this season as he led the second-place runner by a whopping 32-seconds and running the final two miles all alone...His time placed him near the top of all four District Championship races...Also earning All-District honors was sophomore Matthew Brown! His 16:58 finishing time placed him 13th overall in some very fast company.

It marked the first time in at least a decade that MVHS had multiple Boys runners achieve this recognition and solidified Matthew's place as the fastest Major over 3-miles besides Addison in the past three years!

Adrian Morales-Urrutia solidified his standing as our third fastest runner with his 17:42 time, missing All-District honors by just 43 seconds.

Completing the scoring for the team were senior Alex Jimenez-Harding (18:21) and senior David O'zwaldike (18:35). In the team competition, it was an incredibly tight finish with a mere 35 points separating 2nd through 5th place."

Of special note: According to Coach, "an improvement of only 18 seconds for our Boys' average finishing times would have made our Majors the National District runners-up."

Great job Majors!

NO Cell Phone Use During Class

As you may have seen, FCPS rolled out a new Cellphone Policy, with specific expectations for all students. To summarize the high school (grades 9-12) expectations:

  • Phones must be silenced and put away during all instructional periods.

  • Cell phones may be used on campus before the first bell, after the last bell, during passing periods, and lunches.

  • Phone accessories are also to be silenced and away when phone use is prohibited. Smart watches that serve a dual purpose may be worn, but the phone features (texting, Internet viewing, and calls) are to be off when phone use is prohibited.

  • Phones can be stored in a locker or backpack during the day. Students are prohibited from using phones, tablets, and other mobile devices in restrooms and locker rooms, unless there is a medical necessity or emergency.

  • With the approval of the principal or their designee, teachers may allow usage of cell phones for instructional activities where they are the most appropriate tool; however, one-to-one FCPS devices should meet most needs.

  • If your student needs access to their phone for medical accommodations, it is important to note that the current cell phone policy and guidelines have not changed. Therefore, students who currently require access to a cell phone or another personally owned device for medical reasons, or an accommodation to access the curriculum and make progress to their individualized goals, will continue to have such access.

Violation Continuum:
  • 1st Violation: Student receives verbal warning (documented infraction)
  • 2nd Violation: Parent Notification of 2nd violation (documented 2nd infraction)
  • 3rd Violation: Student is referred to administrator (documented 3rd infraction).
  • 4th Violation: Student will receive disciplinary action - which will be confiscation of the device by the administrator. Student will receive the phone back at the end of the school day.
  • 5th Violation: Parent/Caregiver and student will meet with the administrator for intervention plan.

Please see the FCPS Cellphone Expectations by Grade HERE.

MVHS Families -

Just a reminder that Mount Vernon High School has a CLOSED lunch. This means that students are NOT permitted to leave campus to get food at any of the surrounding restaurants or convenience stores.

Unfortunately, we are seeing a number of students who have left campus and have attempted to return to the school building with externally bought food.

Regrettably, due to several instances of where food and beverages were found to have illicit substances in them, we WILL NOT permit externally bought food to be brought into the school from students who have left campus without permission.

In addition, food will also not be permitted to be delivered to students from delivery services, including Uber Eats, Grub Hub, or by individual restaurant delivery services.

ALL external food found on students who have left campus, and is attempting to return to school, will be confiscated. Note, MVHS will not be responsible for food that are confiscated.

Thanks for your understanding in helping us keep all our students safe every day.

In addition to outstanding academic programs, Mount Vernon High School offers students a broad range of extra-curricular and co-curricular activities designed to meet and extend the broad range of student interests. Fine and performing arts students and athletic teams have received numerous awards and recognition. Contributing to Mount Vernon High School's unique character and strength is its diversity. More than 50 countries and 30 languages are represented in its student population. This diversity is enjoyed and celebrated daily, as well as through a series of cultural events that bring students, parents, and faculty together and demonstrate cooperative living in a multicultural world. Mount Vernon High School is further enriched by the support of an active community.

At Mount Vernon High School, we value and believe members within our community should be:

  • Supportive,
  • Passionate,
  • Responsible,
  • Looking for Continuous Growth, &
  • Culturally Responsive

We know that our Majors achieve and thrive together with purpose and pride.
