A note from your Wellness Coach

As we wrap up September, I want to take a moment to celebrate all the ways our students have been learning, growing, and finding their footing this school year. Starting a new school year comes with a lot of feelings, new routines, and new experiences, and our students have been working hard to navigate it all!

This month, we have been focusing on understanding our feelings, making healthy choices, and learning how our actions can affect ourselves and others. These are skills that take practice, and even small moments of growth are worth celebrating. As we head into October, I encourage families to continue making space for conversations about feelings and choices at home. Thank you for partnering with us as we support our students. I am looking forward to all the learning and growth October will bring!

Conversation Starter

Conversation Starter:

💭 “Tell me about a time today when you had a big feeling. What did you do with that feeling?”

Try a follow-up:
💭 “What could you try next time if you have that same feeling?”

This gives children a chance to practice identifying their feelings, reflecting on their actions, and thinking about healthy ways to respond without making the conversation feel like a lesson.

Every Day Matters Every Day Matters

At McKinley Elementary, we believe that every day of learning matters!

Regular school attendance helps students build important academic skills, develop positive relationships, and stay connected to their classroom community. Through the Every Day Matters initiative, Lassen County Office of Education and our schools are working to support students and families in making regular attendance a priority. We understand that barriers can sometimes make getting to school difficult, and we want families to know that support and resources are available.

Building Healthy Attendance Habits

Getting to school every day and arriving on time helps children feel connected, confident, and ready to learn. Building healthy attendance habits starts with creating predictable routines at home.

Try these simple strategies:

🌙 Prepare the night before: Choose clothes, pack backpacks, and gather anything your child will need for the next day.

⏰ Keep a consistent bedtime and morning routine: Predictability can make mornings feel less rushed and stressful.

🎒 Create a “ready-to-go” spot: Keep backpacks, shoes, and other school items in the same place so they are easy to find.

⭐ Celebrate consistency: Notice and celebrate your child's effort in getting ready, arriving on time, and being ready to learn.

💛 Talk about school positively: Remind your child that being at school gives them opportunities to learn, connect with friends, and participate in activities they enjoy.

Family Conversation Starter:
“What is one thing you look forward to at school this week?”

Every school day is an opportunity to learn something new, build relationships, and practice important skills. Small routines at home can make a big difference!
