Hello Falcon Families!

Parent communication and connection between home and school is one of our top priorities here at UMS. This newsletter is your one-stop-shop for all things UMS. We recommend you take a few moments each week as a family to review the contents for upcoming activities and information to help you navigate each week.

Please welcome our new Assistant Principal, Alexys Butler, to our Falcon Nest. She brings a wealth of experience with her from serving as a TUSD elementary teacher, middle school Core teacher, and TUSD English Language Arts Teacher on Special Assignment. She even taught at UMS! We look forward to all of you meeting her when the school year begins.

We also have a new secretary joining our amazing Ms. Utria in the front office - Erica Ortega is new to UMS this year. She is already such an asset to our site, jumping in and helping with registration last week. Ms. Ortega is bilingual and has served in TUSD as a secretary at Sycamore Magnet Academy prior to joining our team. Please welcome her when you visit our front office!

Finally, we are welcoming a new 7th and 8th grade math teacher to our campus - Viviana Zapien. Ms. Zapien has experience teaching middle school math and will be our main Math 7 teacher this school year. We are excited to have her on our team!

UMS will host our Back to School Night on Monday, August 11. We are trying a new format this year and we are looking forward to welcoming our students and families before school begins!

I will host a meeting for parents that are new to UMS from 4:30 - 5:00 PM in the UMS MPR. All grade levels are welcome. Classrooms will be open from 5:00 - 6:30 PM. We will have rotating grade-level presentations in the MPR during this time. See schedule below:

6th Grade: 5:15 - 5:35 PM

7th Grade: 5:40 - 6:00 PM

8th Grade: 6:05 - 6:25 PM

All grade-level teachers will be participating in the grade-level presentations that they teach, so their classrooms will be closed during those times.

Students will not receive their schedule of classes until August 12, so this is an opportunity to get to know all grade-level teachers, counselors, administrators, and our beautiful campus.

We will have food and drink for purchase. PTA will be selling memberships and UMS spirit wear. Please keep in mind that no hats or beanies are allowed at UMS unless they are UMS hats or beanies, plain black (no logos), or plain forest green (no logos). Students are also allowed to wear UMS pajama pants to school; all other pajamas are not allowed. This is a great opportunity to purchase these items for your students, along with T-shirts and sweatshirts.

All 6th grade Falcons are invited to participate in our 6th grade JumpStart on August 12. Students will arrive at 8:00 AM and head in to the UMS MPR. Ms. Harrell, Science and ASB teacher, and Mr. Erickson, Intervention Teacher, will lead the students through their orientation. We recommend that students bring a backpack, something to write with, a snack, and a water bottle.

Parents of 6th graders are invited to a parent meeting with me in the UMS gym that morning. Our parent meeting will be from 8:30 - 10:00 AM. We will be building community together and learning about middle school systems and UMS as a school.

At 10:00, parents will be dismissed to wait for their students to be done at 10:30 in the MPR. During this time, we invite you to join PTA or purchase UMS spirit wear. At 10:30, parents and students are invited to walk our campus to locate your 6th grader's classes. We will print out locator cards for all of our 6th graders.

The UMS campus will be open for locating classes from 10:30 AM - 2:30 PM. Teachers have a work day this day to prepare for school starting the next day. Please respect their time and do not knock on classroom doors. This time will be for locating classrooms and getting to know our campus only.

We are looking forward to welcoming our new Falcons and families to our Falcon Nest!

All students will be able to access their class schedules for fall semester through Aeries on August 12. We do not print out hard copies of schedules for students. Reach out to the office if you need support on accessing your schedule.

Our first day of school for students is Wednesday, August 13. We will be on a late-start schedule that day so school will begin at 9:15 AM.

We invite all 6th grade parents to join us in our 6th grade clap-in on the morning of August 13. Parents will line up in our parking lot area along the sidewalk to form a tunnel that our 6th grade students can walk through to be welcomed and cheered along for their first day of middle school. Families are invited to bring noisemakers, posters, clappers, etc. for this special event. Please do not send your student into the campus with balloons or posters - you will take them with you when you leave. Teachers and staff will form a tunnel inside campus to continue the welcome for our new 6th graders. If you would like to be part of our 6th grade clap-in, please arrive at the front gates no later than 9:00 AM.

There is a list of suggested school supplies below. We appreciate students arriving to school fully prepared to learn. If you have a challenge purchasing school supplies for your student, we will make sure they have what they need on their first day.
