Hey Spartans!

What an incredible week — from silly-stringing Principal Thompson to our amazing Fall Festival and all the Halloween fun! 🎃 Huge thanks to every volunteer who gave their time, talents, and donations to make our Fall Festival truly Spooktacular!

A quick reminder: we have 1:00 PM dismissal every day through November 12th for parent-teacher conferences, and no school on November 11th in honor of Veterans Day. 🇺🇸

We’re also gearing up for some exciting events ahead:

Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day and Friends & Family Friday, hosted by our Newcomb Sankofa Village, on November 14th

20th Anniversary Golf Classic & Friday Night Fever Benefit Bash, hosted by our Newcomb Foundation, on November 14th

Can’t make the Benefit Bash in person? No problem! You can still take part in the silent auction, going live November 9th. Click this link form more details!

Don’t miss out on all the fun and community spirit!

With gratitude,

Lauren Arevian – Foundation President

Amber DeVeny – PTSA President

A Heartfelt Thank You, Spartans!

Many thanks to all the families who participated in and supported our 2025 PTSA Read-A-Thon! Your generosity has made a tremendous impact — funding field trips for every TK–8 student in the 2026–27 school year, another wonderful year of Ground Education for all TK–5 classes, and special lunch-in-the-garden programs for our middle schoolers.

We’re thrilled to share that this year’s Read-A-Thon had more participants than ever before and raised an incredible $46,000!

Congratulations to our Read-A-Thon winners!
This year’s winners are listed below. Families will be contacted by a Read-A-Thon committee member to arrange prize delivery. In addition to our traditional prizes, our top readers and fundraisers in each grade earned the chance to silly string Mr. Thompson—an unforgettable moment, as you can see in the photos below!

With heartfelt gratitude,
Your PTSA Board

Room Parent Coordinator

Hi! My name is Bianca Garcia, and I am the Grade Level Chair for the next 2 years here at Newcomb. My son is in kinder and my daughter is in 6th grade, so I have two beautiful reasons to volunteer my time. I love helping build a strong connection between our amazing teachers and supportive families. Leading the Room Parents lets me help create a fun and positive school experience for everyone. It’s a joy to be part of a community that cares so much about our kids!

Sankofa Parent Village - Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day Co-Chair

Hello! I'm Amber Hopper, mom to Nora (former Newcomb student, now a 9th grader) and Soraya (a current 7th grader). I am actively involved with the Sankofa Parent Village at Newcomb because I want all students to see themselves represented, celebrated, and advocated for within their school's curriculum, activities, and wider community. Co-chairing the Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day is a beautiful opportunity to highlight this historic moment in 1960 when Ruby integrated her all white school in New Orleans. Although she is often portrayed only in the iconic black and white photograph, she is very much alive, thriving, and inspiring acts of kindness, courage, and activism around the country. Many of our students have grandparents who had to attend segregated schools and this event highlights how far we've come...and that the work is not done to make education equitable and inclusive for all children.

Sankofa Parent Village - Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day Co-Chair

Hello! I'm Spring Cooke, Ed.D., mom to Micah (former Newcomb student, now a 12th grader), Jonah (former Newcomb student, now a 10th grader), Ezra (current Newcomb 3rd grader) and Ethan (current Newcomb 1st grader). I am actively involved with the Sankofa Parent Village because I want our community and kids to have a compassionate resource for knowing and learning about Black Americans. Co-chairing the Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day is an opportunity to provide positive resources and inspire our kids to take brave steps to make the world a better place. I believe wholeheartedly in the theme Amber and I have adopted for the walk this year and I hope it inspires our whole community.

Friday, November 14, 2025 will be Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day. This is an annual event commemorated by the California State Senate since 2021, meant to encourage dialogue about Ruby Bridges' historic steps to integrate her elementary school in 1960. The Newcomb Sankofa Village is hosting the event and also November's Friends and Family Friday. Please stop by the tables in front of the school on 11/14 to learn more about Ruby Bridges and how to further her message of spreading kindness and activism to make the world better! Students and families are encouraged to watch Ruby's video last week talking about this year's walk.
