Picture Retake Day Information - Tuesday, October 20th

Picture Retake Day is coming on Tuesday, October 20th. Students taking advantage of picture retakes can bring their picture packages ordered/delivered back with them on that day. Announcements will be made for when students can come down for picture retakes. They will be called down alphabetically, by grade level. If a student does not have a student ID card, they should plan to attend retakes, even if they do not plan on ordering school pictures.

If a student was absent from Back to School Registration, this is their opportunity to get school pictures taken this year. They will also get their Student ID the same day after getting their picture taken.

A digital retake order form and a retake day informational flyer can be found here:

  • Retake Day Informational Flyer
  • Digital Retake Order Form

These forms explain the retake proofing process so parents know their ordering options. Please reach out if you have any questions or need further assistance!

AP Students and Families: Important Registration Information

Action Required by October 30th!

Attention AP Students and Families! We are now entering Step Two of the AP Registration Process, and ALL students enrolled in AP courses must take action before October 30th.

Earlier this fall, students were required to join AP Classroom for each AP course by October 2nd. This step was mandatory for ALL AP students, regardless of whether they planned to take the AP Exam in May.

We are now moving on to the next step: confirming AP Exam participation and submitting payment.

IMPORTANT: Due to a system glitch earlier this year, ALL students who joined AP Classroom were automatically registered to take their corresponding AP Exams in May. We recognize that not every student intends to test. Therefore, ALL AP students must verify their exam registration status for EACH AP course before October 30th.

STEP 1: VERIFY YOUR AP EXAM STATUS

Students must log in to AP Classroom and confirm whether they WILL or WILL NOT take the AP Exam in May.

  1. Log in to AP Classroom.

  2. Review EACH AP subject individually to verify your current exam registration status.

  3. If your status is incorrect, click "Change Status."

  4. A pop-up window will appear allowing you to select whether you WILL or WILL NOT take the exam.

  5. Make your selection and click "Confirm."

Remember: Students enrolled in multiple AP courses must verify their exam status separately for EACH course. Do not assume your current registration status is correct!

STEP 2: PAY FOR YOUR AP EXAMS (IF TESTING)

If your student plans to take an AP Exam in May, payment must be completed through Parent Connect. Each AP Exam costs $100, unless there is a demonstrated financial need verified through the Food Service Department. AP Exam payments are NOW OPEN! Families do not need to wait until October 30th to submit payment.

To pay:

  1. Log in to your Parent Connect account.

  2. Click on the Accounts/SBA tab.

  3. Select Online SBA Payments (highlighted in yellow).

  4. Select your student from the first drop-down menu.

  5. Add each AP Exam your student plans to take in May to your cart and complete checkout.

DEADLINE: OCTOBER 30TH

All AP students must verify their exam registration status, and families of students who plan to test must complete payment before October 30th. We appreciate your attention to these important steps to ensure that students are accurately registered for their May AP Exams.

For questions about AP registration, payment, or financial assistance, please contact Jennifer Napuli, AP Coordinator, at napulij@brightonk12.com.

Updated Student Safety/Security Procedure at BHS

Starting this year, if you or your student enters the building after 7:30, you will notice a few minor updates to our building entry procedures designed to keep our students safe and our buildings secure. The process for entry is outlined below.

  • Anyone looking to enter the building after 7:30 will be required to use the buzzer and be buzzed into the vestibule area. This is no different than past practice. Students should have their Student ID out and visible in order to gain entry into the vestibule area. They may notice building security staff present to check their ID and greet them upon arrival. While this presence may be a change for the high school, it should be a familiar process for anyone who has entered one of our buildings serving younger grades during the school day.
  • Historically, once in the vestibule area, students/adults were able to immediately enter the office area as well as the building through the Main Office since the office door was open/unlocked. This door will now remain locked at all times. As a result, students/parents will need to be buzzed into the Main Office and then will have the ability to enter the building once checked in from there.
  • As a reminder, students should have their Student ID out ad visible in order to gain access to the building. Guests looking to enter the actual building via the Main Office should plan to bring their ID as well so that we can use it to check them in/out.

BHS Tutor List

Each year, the Counseling Department puts together a Tutor List to help our BHS students who may be struggling with their academic course work.

The individuals on this tutoring list have reached out and asked to be included as a resource for our BHS students and their families. Qualifications have been self-reported and it is up to the student/family to find the tutor that makes the most sense for them, arrange any meetings, and manage any necessary payments independent of the school.

A copy of the Tutor List for the 2026-27 school year can be found here.

You will note on the BHS Tutor List, there is also information about free peer tutoring that takes place two days a week each week (Tuesdays and Wednesdays). Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions you may have at this point in time.

BHS Attendance Policy

As always, we will work with you/your student if there are extenuating circumstances, but our goal is to have students in front of their teachers as much as possible as we know it increases the likelihood of their success. The full BHS Attendance Policy is outlined below:

Absences:

Each semester, students will be allowed 9 absences. When the absence is excused, the student will be able to make up missed work/assignments/tests without penalty. If the absence is unexcused, the student will not be able to make up missed work/assignments/tests. Once a student reaches 10 absences (excused or unexcused), he/she may enter into a “loss of credit” status. The student will continue to attend class and work towards academic success. If there are no additional absences, the “loss of credit” status may revert back into course credit with the earned grade. In cases of continued but limited excused absences, the student will have the opportunity to appeal the “loss of credit” status, presenting evidence of extenuating circumstances, and possibly have credit reinstated to their grade level principal.

Please note: Excused absences that WILL NOT count in the (9) day limitation are those for documented medical and court appointments, religious observances, funerals, and those for school business and suspensions.

Per Board Policy 5301, the Building Principal or designee may impose additional consequences for excessive absenteeism, consistent with the student handbook or published grading procedures.

Absentee reports will be run by Administration at progress reports and marking periods throughout the school year. Based on those reports, the following will take place.

*Note: 10 or more absences per semester, student enters a loss of credit status (NC). Every 5 tardies = 1 absence.

** Appeal process goes to the Grade Level Principal for potential credit reinstatement.

Tardies:

Students are allowed 3 tardies per semester without a disciplinary referral. Once a student hits the 4th tardy, they will be sent to their Grade Level Principal for a student conference. The next offense will result in making up time during an after school detention. Multiple offenses will escalate the student discipline. A parent phone call does NOT excuse a tardy.

Career Chats at BHS are Back!

Career Chats give students the opportunity during Advisory to explore different career pathways and hear directly from professionals about their careers, experiences, and advice. These conversations provide students with a chance to learn about a variety of careers and begin thinking about possible pathways for their future.

Please see the Career Chat Calendar 26-27 for scheduled presenters. We are still looking for additional professionals who would be willing to share their career journey with our students. If you know someone who may be interested, please share the opportunity and have them sign up here.

Thank you for your continued support in encouraging students to attend Career Chats and take advantage of these valuable learning opportunities!

Senior Yearbook Dates

Seniors at BHS typically submit a senior portrait for the yearbook in lieu of their ID photo. Portraits must be submitted to the yearbook no later than November 20 through our photo-sharing site at https://www.yearbooknerds.com/brighton-high-school. Guidelines for portraits are posted on the site (and also provided here). Parents who wish to order a yearbook or purchase a recognition ad for their senior may do so at the same site and can get a reduced price if they order early! The early deadline for senior recognition ads is November 30.

Seniors may opt to sign up for a Portraits by Alex session at the high school for a $50 fee. This session will include a portrait for submission to the yearbook only; digital images may be purchased for an additional fee directly from the photographer. Sessions are offered November 11-12 and may be reserved at https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0A45A4AA2AAAF94-63978728-class on a first-come, first-served basis.

Scholarship Opportunities

There are a number of local, state, and national scholarships that are shared with district personnel that we make every effort to share with our students and families as well. Some of these scholarships will be highlighted individually as they are brought to our attention or as they are in need of applicants. There are also scholarship search services for less local scholarships that we provide information on too. These include opportunities to increase access to different postsecondary options, not just college. A few of these resources are provided below as our students and families begin the search process.

Senior Questionnaire - Link Included

No matter what post-secondary option a student is considering, it is possible that they may require letters of recommendation that help them accomplish their post-secondary pursuits. One of the best tools to help in the receipt of high quality letters of recommendation is sharing the correct, important information with those who will be writing these letters. The Senor Questionnaire is one of the best ways to provide this information to building administration and counselors. A copy of student responses will be shared with the student, but we also have a digital copy that can be typed on or hand written on if that is preferred by the student and better meets their needs. Links to these resources are provided below:

Livingston County Job Shadow Days

The Liv Co FALL Job Shadow Day is coming up November 4–6, 2026. We now have more than 215 job-shadow opportunities—and that number is still growing! We continue to hear great stories from students who have used Job Shadow Day to confirm a career pathway, make a meaningful connection with an employer, or even land a job.

Registration opens October 14 at 6:00 p.m. As you know, opportunities are available on a first-come, first-served basis across the county, so early communication is important. We want students to have the best possible chance of securing the experience they are hoping for!

Job Shadow Day Description:

BHS, in partnership with Livingston ESA’s Career Development Department, has planned a countywide, bi-annual event, Liv Co Job Shadow Day, on Wednesday, November 4 - Friday, November 6, 2026. This is a one day activity designed to show Juniors and Seniors a bit about what a day in the life of different careers is like. There are many diverse opportunities for students to shadow, ranging from aircraft mechanics to veterinarians to HVAC technicians.

Sign up for students opens on October 14th at 6pm. Students can register and sign up on the same day! Registration involves a parent signature to confirm students' permission to participate. Students can preview the website ahead of time to see what Job Shadow Opportunities are available at the Livingston Career Hub.

Please note that career availability is on a first come, first served basis, so it would be a good idea to have a list of top five choices. Some careers require extra paperwork, so please check that out ahead of time. Extra forms are attached to the Job Shadow Profile. All extra forms are due to the employer via email by October 26th, or the job shadow will be canceled. The last day to sign up for Job Shadows for students is October 26th, 2026.

How Students & Families Can Prepare:

  • Discuss Options: Have a conversation this weekend about career fields, industries, or job roles that spark your interest.

  • Register Early: Registration opens Wednesday, Oct. 14th on the Livingston Career Hub. Popular placements fill up quickly, so don't wait!

  • Complete Prerequisites: Make sure all required permission slips and documentation are submitted by the posted deadlines.

Registration & Support:

  • Need help signing up? Check out the Student Registration and Sign up for step-by-step instructions.
