Mr. Stacy Marusic: Vice-Principal, Grades 10 & 11

Ms. Andrea Davidson: Principal, Grade 12

Principal's Message...

‘uy’ skweyul Wellington Secondary families and friends,

I hope December’s newsletter finds you well. I love the month of December because it is a month where many communities come together to celebrate, reflect, and share traditions that bring warmth and joy during the colder days. Whether through family gatherings, community events, or personal traditions, this time of year offers moments to connect with others and share in the spirit of generosity, gratitude, and togetherness. At Wellington, we recognize and appreciate the diversity of celebrations that take place during this time. Whether you celebrate through festive meals, giving back to your community, or simply spending time with loved ones, we encourage our students to take this time to reflect on what these traditions mean to them and the values they embody, such as kindness, gratitude, and the importance of family and community.

We are just a few short weeks away from our much-needed winter break, and we know that everyone is looking forward to a time of rest and rejuvenation. Whether you’re spending time with family, participating in cultural celebrations, or simply enjoying the quieter pace of winter, we hope this season brings moments of peace and joy.

In the final weeks of school, we continue to support our students in their learning journey. We are proud of their hard work and resilience as they head into this winter season. Let’s keep our spirits high and continue to support one another through the final stretch of the semester over the next few months.

On behalf of the entire school community, we wish you a wonderful December filled with warmth, reflection, and connection.

la’lum’uthut / take good care of yourselves,

Ms. Andrea Davidson – Principal

ATHLETIC NEWS from Ms McRae

As our fall season comes to an end, we want to acknowledge and thank our senior students for their amazing commitment to their Wellington programs.

On the senior boys volleyball team (finishing 5th at the Island Championships) we want to thank: Chester Shephard, Keiran Hoover, Jonny Pimlott, Jaxon Goncalves for their dedication and passion to the sport of volleyball. Also thank you to Craig Hoover for leading that team for the past 2 years as the head coach.

The senior girls volleyball team went undefeated winning the North Island Championships and came 5th at Islands as well this season. Our fearless leaders in grade 12 have given so much focus to the team this year, and were amazing role models for the younger athletes on the team. Thank you to: Avery Luciuk, Jorja Furey, Marina Holtz, Vilma Silva, Saba Forghani, and to their coach Madelin Boas who has been at the head of the team as coach for many seasons. What an amazing group of senior athletes this year.

Our senior boys soccer team also had a close to their season at the Island Championships where they played very strong games. The team had many grade 12 athletes who were pushing the team to success and organizing some amazing team dinners. Thank you to: Cooper Dixon, Max Slater, Daytton Stocks, Holden West, Jack Chutka, Ryan Faganello, Cash Hanratty, Jayden Ingaran, Joe Madill, Finely Miles, and a special thank you to the senior boys soccer coach – Scott Robertson for spending his time in the sun and rain coaching this group of athletes.

We also had some senior swimmers dive into the pool as a Wellington athlete for the last time. Hannah Duffell, Drew Duffell and Brandon Zsigovics represented us at Provincials in a relay and adding Sofia Ibrahim the relay team came 5th place. Thank you for pushing us to keep swimming alive at Wellington. We appreciate you.

We are moving into our basketball season with 8 different teams at Wellington. We will be hosting SEVEN tournaments this year and all of our athletes will be working hard for the next few months. We hope to see you in the stands cheering on the Cats.

International News from Ms. N. McRae

As we move into December, we have a large group of students going to Whistler for their trip. Shopping in Vancouver, and skating in Nanaimo are coming up for this month. Ms. McRae handed out 20 donuts to ISE students who had AMAZING report cards.

We are in the works of planning a good-bye activity for January, and can’t believe that the one semester students are already thinking about returning home. There have been many students who have decided to extend their stay here at Wellington for the full year. We are happy to have you.

We hope that you have a wonderful winter break with your host families and being able to enjoy a Canadian winter. Let’s hope we see some snow for those of you who haven’t seen snow before.

Counseling Corner: Navigating the Holiday Season with Resilience

As we step into the festive month of December, the Counseling Department is here to support our students and families in navigating the unique challenges and joys that the holiday season may bring. This time of year can be both exciting and stressful, and our goal is to ensure that everyone has the resources they need to thrive.

Managing Stress and Expectations:

The holiday season often comes with increased expectations and pressures. As we celebrate together, it's important to remember that everyone experiences the holidays differently. If you're feeling overwhelmed, take a moment to prioritize self-care. Simple activities like deep breathing, a short walk, or spending time with loved ones can make a significant difference.

Building Resilience:

The holiday season is an excellent time to focus on building resilience. This includes setting realistic goals, maintaining healthy routines, and seeking support when needed. If you're unsure where to start, our counseling team can provide guidance and resources to help you navigate this process.

Strategic Use of Time:

As the semester comes to a close, we encourage students to use the holiday break wisely. Consider using this time to catch up on schoolwork and assignments, reducing stress as we approach the end of the semester. Planning ahead and staying organized can contribute to a smoother transition back to academic responsibilities.

Finally, if you find that you need to talk to someone over the holiday about your mental health, please reach out the Vancouver Island Crisis Society who have several ways to communicate.

Phone: 1-888-494-3888 (24 hours a day, seven days a week)

Text: 250-800-3806 (available 6pm to 10pm, seven days a week)

Chat: visit www.vicrisis.ca

Visit their website above for further resources!

You can also call 988 which is a new Canada wide crisis line that has recently launched.

Wishing you a joyful and rejuvenating holiday season!

YEARBOOK ADVERTISING

In order to promote public awareness of local businesses we are committing approximately 4-6 pages devoted specifically to local entrepreneurs.

As yearbooks are traditionally timeless and rarely discarded, they provide a medium of advertisement for businesses for years to come. Our intent within these pages is to allow businesses to place their logos or other forms of advertisement in exchange for funds that will be used to purchase additional cameras and equipment for the school.

A receipt will be forwarded to any businesses that wish to take part. If you have any additional questions or comments please contact me at sbhatti@sd68.bc.ca.
