Fisher Family Update

June 5th, 2020

Fisher FamilyUpdateJune 5th, 2020

Dear Fisher Families,

If you haven’t already, I encourage you to read this letter from Dr. Gough and Mr. Hahn that was sent to families earlier this week. In the letter, Dr. Gough and Mr. Hahn share the commitment of the Walpole Public Schools to combat racism and collaborate with families, students and community members to continue to provide a welcoming, safe and supportive environment for all.

Fisher School prides itself in being an inclusive, safe and respectful home away from home for our children, families and staff. However, as Dr. Gough and Mr. Hahn said, we can do better. The teachers and I will also reexamine and reflect upon how we can better ensure equity while valuing the diversity of our school and community. We will provide more opportunities for our students and families to communicate their experiences and feelings. We will listen and act to make progress and improve the climate and culture of our school.

The Walpole administrative leadership team is working together to discuss practices for improvement. We’ve begun by examining resources we can share with families and staff. These resources, A Teaching Tolerance Publication and embracerace.org are offered in the letter. At the elementary level, we also want to share 31 Children's Books to Support Conversations on Race, Racism, and Resistance. Please reach out to me, our school counselors or any staff member if you or your child would like to talk.

Principal, Brian Bemiss - bbemiss@walpole.k12.ma.us

School Counselor, Carly Callaghan - ccallaghan@walpole.k12.ma.us

School Adjustment Counselor, Karly White - kwhite@walpole.k12.ma.us

Fisher School shares the sentiments of Dr. Gough’s letter to families; we stand in solidarity with those who confront bigotry and fight for equality.

Sincerely,

Brian Bemiss

Student Belongings Pick Up Procedures

1.Please approach Fisher School, coming up Gould Street toward Route 1A. In doing this we will not cause a traffic jam on 1A. Enter the driveway by the main entrance during your specific grade level time.

2. Follow the signs/cones to the pick up area. Please DO NOT EXIT YOUR VEHICLE. Pop open the trunk of your vehicle.

3. Please place a sign in the passenger side window of your vehicle with your child’s LAST NAME. Please ensure that the writing can be seen from a distance.

4. Please place any school borrowed library books or teacher borrowed books and/or materials in the trunk of your car prior to coming to school. We will retrieve them when you pop your trunk. Students do not need to return borrowed chromebooks at this time.

5. A staff member of the grade level team will approach your car, confirm the nametag, retrieve and place student belongings into your trunk. Ms. Moyes will be at the school to return any medication that students had in the nurse’s office. Staff members will be wearing masks and gloves throughout the distribution process.

6. Please exit the upper driveway, closest to route 1A (where our buses/vans exit). Staff will direct you. We are working hard to follow the recommended social distancing guidelines during this scheduled time. Please refrain from socializing and maintain the recommended distance from others during this time.

Most importantly, we can’t wait to see our students….in person!

Term II Report Cards

Student report cards for Term II will be made available for families to view by accessing the Aspen Family Portal on Friday, June 19th. Instructions for logging into your account to view your child(ren)'s report card will be provided at that time. To more effectively communicate student progress to families in this unique learning environment, report cards will take a narrative format using a newly created form. The narrative template developed by grade level teachers addresses essential standards and are consistent across the grade level. Art, Music and Physical Education teachers have also developed common narratives addressing essential standards. Next year, we anticipate returning to the traditional standards based report card.

A Message from Walpole High School Principal Stephen Imbusch

Dear Students and Parents:

This Sunday, June 7th, we will be graduating the members of the Class of 2020. Due to the current pandemic, the ceremony will take a different look from our normal Commencement Ceremony on Turco Field. However, our intention is to give everyone in town a chance to celebrate the accomplishments of our seniors. To that end, we are having a Parade of Cars that will leave the high school at around 4pm, drive through town (see map attached), and return to the high school.

Please come out to the parade route to cheer on and show your support for our seniors and their families. Businesses and families who live along the parade route are decorating their lawns, and getting ready to give these seniors a send-off that they will remember.

Please use the attached flyer to spread the word!

FISHER FARMS UPDATE

Dear Fisher families,

Our beloved "Fisher farms" will lay fallow this growing season. While this is a disappointment, the unfortunate circumstances will provide the school garden an unexpected benefit - an entire season to replenish soil nutrients from our repeated plantings. Within the confines of our small garden, it was sometimes difficult to perform "crop-rotation" in order to replenish the soil.

We thank you, our collective Fisher family, for your volunteerism, donations and support over the years...and look forward to NEXT Spring 2021 to connect your child/ren's (our student's) educational learning and community-service through our "living classroom."

Musically,

Farmer Jim

WPS Summer Learning Program

We are excited to offer a new program for our K-8 students this summer. The WPS Summer Learning Program will provide grade-level teaching and support in a remote setting at no cost to interested families. The program will include approximately 3-5 hours of instruction per week with qualified staff blending live digital meetings with independent work time.

This is a great opportunity for students to continue developing their skills and help them prepare for a strong start in September while having some fun along the way. The program will run from July 7-July 30 and is open to all students currently in grades K-8. This program is separate from our Extended School Year Program (special education). Parents will be contacted directly if that program applies to their children.

If interested in the new Summer Learning Program, please complete the brief form found in the link below by Wednesday, June 3. If you have any questions, please contact program coordinator Elizabeth Smith (esmith@walpole.k12.ma.us).
