Literacy Tip of the Week
Build Storytelling Skills at Home
Storytelling is a powerful way to strengthen your child’s language, vocabulary, comprehension, and creativity. Encourage your child to tell stories about their day, a favorite memory, or even an imaginary adventure. As they share, ask open-ended questions such as, “What happened next?” or “How did the character feel?” to help them add details and develop their ideas.
Try this at home: Create a “Story Jar” by writing different characters, settings, and events on slips of paper. Have your child choose one from each category and use them to create an original story.Take turns adding details to make the story even more exciting!
Remember: There is no “perfect” story. The goal is to encourage your child to communicate their ideas, use descriptive language, and build confidence in speaking and sharing their thoughts.
Family Challenge: This week, set aside 10 minutes for a Family Story Circle. Each family member contributes one sentence to create a story together. See how creative and silly your family can be while practicing important literacy skills.
Every story your child tells helps build the foundation for stronger reading and writing skills.
