In our September newsletter, we excitedly welcomed everyone to a new academic year, reintroduced our Staff Council, and shared some of our highlights from the start of the school year. This month, we look ahead to our All-Staff Meeting on October 15th, where we will gather as a staff to hear school-wide updates and news. Ahead of this event, we, as a Staff Council, would like to take a moment to highlight the mission of the Staff Council and share a little bit about our “dos and don’ts” as a council.

Our goal is to ensure that the Staff Council continues to serve as a supportive, collaborative, and representative voice for our staff community. We hope this overview provides some clarity about our role and how we can best support our colleagues and school community throughout the year.

Our Mission

The Rutgers School of Social Work Staff Council will serve in an advisory capacity to the Dean and Associate Dean for Administration and Finance on matters pertaining to the daily activities and work conditions of all staff members as they strive to support the mission and strategic plans of the School.

As a Staff Council, we:

  • Continuously facilitate communication between staff and school leadership.
  • Foster a sense of community among SSW's diverse population.
  • Act as a voice and advocate for the best interests of all staff members
  • Collect and disseminate information.
  • Participate, assist, and advise in decision-making processes.
  • Provide staff with a forum.
  • Promote and advocate for staff professionalism and support opportunities.
  • Contribute to and develop initiatives.

As a Staff Council, we DO NOT:

  • Have final decision-making or policy-setting authority.
  • Handle individual staff grievances, disciplinary matters, or personnel disputes.
  • Manage day-to-day HR administration.
  • Approve or guarantee funding.
  • Act on behalf of an individual staff member in a dispute with the school.

We look forward to seeing you all next Thursday at 1pm at our All-Staff Meeting!

All the best,

Your Staff Council

IIDEA Update IIDEA Update

The IIDEA Committee has been informed that the Provost will not pursue a name change at this time, though a future university website audit could prompt a review of IIDEA-related terminology. The committee also celebrated the success of its May event, recommended expanding the Strategic Planning DEI, Culture, and Belonging Committee membership to include a staff member and doctoral student, and identified next steps related to communications, reinstating the IIDEA Awards Committee, planning the 2027 event, and preparing recommendations for the Strategic Planning Committee before the October 14, 2026 meeting.

Strategic Planning Corner Strategic Planning Corner

At a recent Dean’s Advisory Committee meeting, the Dean led discussion about strategic planning and the University’s budgetary constraints and hiring impacts. Regarding strategic planning, conversation centered around leadership, goal setting, measuring progress, and reviewing past accomplishments, as well as proposed revisions to the structure, timeline, and organization of the committees to ensure staff are represented across them. Staff Council has a seat on the Dean’s Advisory Committee and will continue to bring staff perspectives to these discussions.

We should be provided with more information about strategic planning and other topics at the All-Staff meeting. In addition, please look for a forthcoming invitation to join an in-person Community Dialog being held by the Dean with staff on October 28th.
