Lebanon High School
LHS Families,
As we hit mid-fall, we're transitioning from the excitement of a new school year into the steady, demanding rhythm of the academic season. To help your student perform at their best without draining their battery, here is our October Family Playbook:
Offense
Build in a mandatory 20-to-30 minute "decompression zone" (a walk, a shower, or a quiet snack) immediately after school to separate the school day from homework time.
Encourage short, 15-minute daily review sessions instead of high-stress study marathons the night before a test.
Defense
Sit down with your student for 5 minutes every Sunday to look at the upcoming week's calendar, tests, and assignment deadlines together.
Keep cell phones charging in a central area during study blocks and bedtime to preserve focus and sleep quality.
Special Teams
Check ProgressBook together weekly to celebrate growth and catch hiccups early.
If attendance, morning logistics, or academic stress become a hurdle, lean on us. Contact our office or counseling department anytime. We are ready to step in with resources and solutions.
Let's keep this strong momentum going!

SAVE Student Act Opt-Out
As part of the Ohio SAVE Students Act, students in grades 6 through 12 are required to take part in annual lessons that focus on suicide awareness and prevention, safety training and violence prevention, and social inclusion. Our school district has now completed these lessons for the past couple of years. These lessons will take place on Oct 14, Nov 18, and Jan 21. Pursuant to Ohio House Bill 123, we will continue to provide them so that students build important life skills, strengthen school safety, and support the well-being of themselves and others. Families who previously completed an opt out form will continue to have that opt out honored without the need to complete another one. If you would like to review or submit a new opt out request for your student, you may do so here: OPT OUT LINK. We appreciate your partnership in ensuring both the safety and the growth of our students.
Food for Thought
As October settles in and academic expectations intensify, high school students often find themselves juggling heavier course loads, varsity schedules, and extracurricular commitments. To help families support their teenagers during this demanding mid-fall stretch, we have gathered key findings from educational neuroscience and cognitive psychology on what actually drives durable learning and well-being.
Spaced Practice over Last-Minute Cramming
Cognitive research demonstrates that late-night "cramming" prior to an exam primarily relies on short-term working memory, which quickly fades after the test. In contrast, Spaced Practice (or distributed learning) involves breaking study sessions into shorter, frequent bursts spread out over several days. Returning to material after a rest period forces the brain to retrieve information, strengthening neural pathways and shifting knowledge into long-term memory. Encourage your student to review class notes or complete practice problems for 15–20 minutes daily per subject, rather than undertaking four-hour marathons the night before a test.
Active Retrieval Practice vs. Passive Rereading
Many students study by re-reading notes, highlighting textbooks, or reviewing slides. However, research shows these are passive techniques that create a false sense of mastery. Instead, students should focus the brain to retrieve information from memory without looking at notes which builds far more durable retention and significantly reduces test anxiety during exams. Suggest that your teen self-quiz using flashcards, complete practice questions without looking at supporting materials, or explain a complex concept aloud in their own words.
Sleep and Memory Consolidation
Sleep is not merely a rest period for the body; it is an active phase of cognitive processing. During deep sleep stages, the brain reorganizes and stabilizes information learned throughout the day. Sacrificing sleep to study late yields diminishing returns, leading to decreased executive function, lower test accuracy, and heightened stress. Help your teen set a consistent bedtime routine, keeping cell phones and screens outside the bedroom during study blocks and bedtime to preserve 8 to 9 hours of quality sleep.

Senior Immunization Requirement
The Ohio Department of Health requires immunization with the Meningococcal (MCV4) vaccine before entry into 12th grade at LHS or WCCC. Your student may have already received one dose of this vaccine, but a second dose must be administered on or after the 16th birthday. If your student has not had these immunizations, please make arrangements for them to receive them as soon as possible. This immunization can be obtained from your family physician, the Warren County Health Department, or the surrounding area clinics and pharmacies. Proof of immunization or immunization exemption* must be provided to the nursing office, by Ohio law, your student will be excluded from school.
You can submit them through fax 513.933.2150 or email via the following:
hamilton.cailey@lebanonschools.org
