NOTES FROM TITLE TALK
As we approach the end of the school year, we want to address the issue of “Summer Slide”. Younger students are at greater risk of losing skills learned throughout the school year because they are at a crucial stage of development. According to Scholastic, “Summer Slide” has been a topic of research since at least 1996. There are many ways to keep this from happening to your student, without making summer reading boring.
Some examples of this:
Keep books in your students’ hands by visiting the library or the Bookmobile. (You will need a library card.) Link to Lane Library
E-books can be found for free with your library card at HooplaDigital.com
Look for a “Little Free Library” in your neighborhood. One can be found outside your elementary school.
Activities:
Create a cozy reading space for your student with lights, comfy pillows, and stuffed animals to read to.
Go camping with your student in your living room with a blanket fort, flashlight, and a good book.
Participate in a summer reading bingo challenge. Here is one you may like from Scholastic! Summer Reading Bingo
Most importantly, please read with your child over the summer! YOU are the best teacher for your child!

AROUND THE COMMUNITY
The City of Oxford is developing a Parks Master Plan with Pros Consulting. Please take a moment to complete the information at the link below. The site is specific for the Master Plan and has a survey, virtual mapping, and vision board. A lot of Talawanda families are park users and the city would like their feedback.
Every May, Older Americans Month recognizes the contributions of older adults, highlights aging trends, and reaffirms commitments to serve our older community members. The 2026 theme is “Champion Your Health”.
Throughout the month of May, Oxford Seniors, Age-Friendly Oxford, and the Coalition for a Healthy Community, Oxford Area are partnering to highlight and offer programming focused on promoting physical, mental, and emotional health and well-being at all ages.
You can participate by playing “Community BINGO” with us! It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3!
1) Print your own or pick up a Community Bingo card at any of the following locations:
- Oxford Seniors, 922 Tollgate Dr., Oxford
- Oxford Lane Library, 441 S. Locust St.
- The Knolls of Oxford, Clubhouse or Front Desk
- Scripps Gerontology Center, 396 Upham Hall, on campus
2) Every time you do something listed on the card, mark it off. The goal is to get “BINGO” as many times as possible. A “BINGO” is marking off any 5 squares in a straight line – either vertically, horizontally, or diagonally.
3) Bring your completed BINGO card to the Intergenerational BINGO Party on Sun. May 31 from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. at Oxford Seniors for prizes, snacks, and FUN!
A PDF version of the BINGO card is attached to this message if you'd like to print one at home.
NOTES FROM THE OFFICE
Student Fees:
Fees have been loaded to PaySchools if you wish to pay online. You can also pay in the office with cash or check.
Lunch Accounts:
As a reminder, you are able to add funds to your student's lunch account through the PaySchools system. If your student's account reaches -$50 it will be rolled into your school fees. Please be mindful and keep your student's account current. You can use PaySchools, send a check or cash to the school office to take care of your student's balance.
Free and Reduced:
If you would like to apply for free or reduced lunches, please reach out to the Marshall office or the Marshall social worker Chrissy Rolfes at rolfesc@talawanda.org. We can help walk you through the online application or help you fill out a paper form in the office. If you qualify for FREE lunch, your fees will also be waived. (EXCEPT for 5th grade Chromebook fee) If you qualify for REDUCED, fees will be reduced by 85% (EXCEPT for 5th grade Chromebook fee) and meals will be FREE.
Dismissal:
Thank you for your help in keeping dismissal safe and smooth for everyone. We ask that when your child is called to your car, you please help them climb in and then pull forward to the upper lot to buckle them into their car seat. Remaining stopped in the dismissal lane to buckle your child slows down the process for all families and, more importantly, it creates an unsafe situation when other cars attempt to go around. Your cooperation makes dismissal safer and quicker for all of our students.
Final Forms:
Remember, if you have any changes to your information (phone number, address, who can pick up your student, etc) throughout the school year, change it in Final Forms! The office is notified of these changes and will update our information. IF you have an address change, you must submit new proof of residency to the office before we will update your address.
