A Message from Principal Ivelia
Fall into The Viking Way!
Viking Families,
October is here, bringing crisp mornings, changing leaves, and one of our favorite traditions -Homecoming. This year, we celebrate another chapter in the 117-year story of Viking pride while creating new memories and traditions for today’s students. Homecoming is a great reminder that being part of a school community is about more than what happens in the classroom; it’s about connection, belonging, and the experiences we share together. We hope you’ll be able to join us for the game and our student's for the first dance of the year - two great opportunities for students to connect, make memories, and celebrate being a Viking.
Our 4A Spotlight this month is Academics, and that makes October a great time to pause and reinforce the routines that help students learn at high levels. Being here matters. Students benefit from the instruction, discussion, collaboration, and relationships that happen throughout the school day. While we understand that illness and extenuating circumstances sometimes require students to be away, we are continuing to focus on improving on-time arrival, reducing single-period absences, and strengthening overall attendance.
You may notice some of these efforts happening at the start of the school day. This month, we are conducting an Attendance Blitz, where staff are intentionally welcoming students as they arrive and checking in with students who are late. The goal is simple: to reinforce that every minute of learning matters and that being on time helps students - and their classmates - make the most of the instructional experience. We appreciate families partnering with us in making regular, on-time attendance a priority.
As always, our October newsletter includes important information, upcoming events, resources, and opportunities for students and families. Please take a few minutes to look through it and stay connected to what is happening at LSHS.
Thank you for continuing to partner with us in creating a school where every Viking is known, challenged, and supported to learn at high levels. I’m looking forward to all that October will bring - more learning, more connection, and plenty of Viking pride.
Go Vikings!

Viking 4A Spotlight: Academics
LSHS Academic Recognition
LSHS is built on the 4 A’s—Activities, Arts, Athletics, and, most importantly, Academics. We take pride in celebrating our students’ successes, and when it comes to academics, two key ways we recognize achievement are through our Semester Awards Nights and the Student of the Month program.
This brief video highlights the expectations and qualities we look for when honoring students with these recognitions.
Celebrating Academic Excellence!
Congratulations to Yekebir Bekele, Saahith Vangala, and Joshua Wilde, who have received Letters of Commendation for their outstanding performance on the 2025 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT)! These students are among approximately 34,000 students nationwide being recognized for their exceptional academic achievement. This prestigious distinction reflects their hard work, dedication, and commitment to academic excellence. We are incredibly proud of their accomplishments and invite our Viking community to join us in celebrating their success!

Schoolinks- High School and Beyond Plan
High School & Beyond Plan Lesson #1 (Launched 9/25)
This year students will interact with SchooLinks during their FLEX periods once during the Fall, Winter and Spring to explore careers and post-secondary training options. They will dive deeper with their Career Specialist to learn how this connects to their future. Students are expected to finish all assigned state-mandated tasks by April 30th each year, which includes formally submitting a High School and Beyond Plan in late spring. For our Seniors, this is a graduation requirement.
On September 25th, Students logged into SchooLinks to update their goals and plans as well as start their 2026-2027 tasks. Students learned to navigate the platform, participated in a career assessment and updated their Profile Page, which can create a resume for them! Students also set a SMART goal for themselves to help them as they work to build the future they envision. They also learned where to find events, career-related field trips, job opportunities, and how to submit volunteer hours, all now available in SchooLinks!

World Language Literacy Test
120 Students Supported by the LSHS ML Program
Lake Stevens High School proudly serves over 120 multilingual learners (ML) by supporting English language acquisition in their selected classes. Rather than pulling students out of class to receive support, ML specialists and paraeducators “push in” to collaborate with teachers and help students understand assignments. Several of our teachers are trained in GLAD strategies, which help all students learn vocabulary and concepts more effectively. Our ML specialists also put out a weekly 2-minute podcast sharing instructional strategies and student voices within our district.

College in the High School - Details
There are two major steps required to sign up for College in the High School Credit (CiHS): the first is to apply to college and the second is to register for classes/credits. Most of our CiHS classes are through EvCC, but there are few with UW, Edmonds CC, and Eastern. If your student is taking classes where the college credit is offered through more than one school they will need to complete both steps for each school.

October Attendance News
At Lake Stevens High School, our goal is for every student to be present, on time, ready, and engaged. Regular attendance helps students understand new learning, participate in discussions, maintain school relationships, earn credits, and remain on track for graduation. Arriving on time is equally important because the opening minutes of class often include directions, instruction, and opportunities to connect.
Chronic absenteeism is missing 10% or more of the school year, including both excused and unexcused absences. Did you know if your student misses 3 periods, it counts as a whole day? Missing only two days per month can place a student at risk of becoming chronically absent. Strong attendance is associated with stronger academic prospects and a greater likelihood of graduating.
LSHS Attendance Blitz
LSHS has begun an Attendance Blitz to address late arrival and establish strong habits early in the year. Administrators, counselors, and office staff are meeting students who arrive after the first bell, helping them reflect on the importance of punctuality, tracking repeated concerns, communicating with families, and providing support when barriers are identified.
The first contact includes a warning and reflection. Repeated late arrivals may result in lunch detention, additional family communication, and progressively increased interventions. When tardiness continues, families may be invited to meet with the student, counselor, and administrator to develop a formal attendance plan.
This work is not only about consequences. It is about helping students develop the reliability, preparation, time management, and perseverance expected in college, careers, and future workplaces.
How Families Can Help
We recommend noticing patterns early, involving students in monitoring their attendance, maintaining positive communication, and working together to address the reasons students are missing school. Families can help by:
Checking attendance and tardiness records regularly.
Establishing consistent bedtime and morning routines.
Preparing clothing, school materials, lunches, and transportation plans the night before.
Building in extra travel time and creating a backup transportation plan.
Scheduling appointments and vacations outside the school day whenever possible.
Talking with students about how attendance connects to learning, activities, graduation, and future goals.
Contacting the counselor or administrator when anxiety, health concerns, transportation, family responsibilities, bullying, academics, or another barrier affects attendance.
Following school health guidance when a student is ill and working with the school when health concerns begin causing repeated absences.
Excusing an absence through the attendance office within three school days of the
We recognize that students sometimes face difficult circumstances. Please reach out early so we can problem-solve together before missed days or late arrivals begin to add up.
Every day builds momentum. Every class creates an opportunity. Every student matters.

Monthly Safety Drill
As part of our ongoing commitment to student and staff safety, in October we will practice our lockdown procedures.
A lockdown is used when there is an immediate threat inside or very near the school building. During a lockdown, students and staff practice securing classrooms and following established safety procedures. Our goal is to make sure everyone knows what to do and can respond calmly and efficiently in an emergency. As with our other safety drills, this practice is an important opportunity for students and staff to build familiarity and confidence with our procedures.
Service Animals in Schools
The Lake Stevens School District acknowledges that there may be an educational benefit to be gained by the inclusion of a Service or Therapy Animal in the instructional program. Board Policy 6025 - Animals as Part of the Instructional Program and Board Policy 6020 - Service Animals in the Schools outlines the requirements and procedures that must be followed when determining the need for a Service or Therapy Animal.
Our students’ health and safety are our priorities. There may be a Service or Therapy Animal working with a student or group of students or a staff member on our campus.
If you believe this will have a severe, negative affect to your child’s health condition, we strongly encourage you to fill out the form linked below so our nursing staff can accommodate both your child and the handler of the animal.
Halloween Costume Guidelines
As we approach Halloween, we want to take a moment to clarify our school district’s expectations regarding costumes during school hours. In the spirit of maintaining a safe and inclusive learning environment, costumes are not allowed at school. We understand that Halloween is a fun and exciting time for our students, but this policy is in the best interest of our entire school community.
Here are a few reasons for this decision:
Maintaining focus on learning: Halloween costumes can be a source of distraction, making it challenging for students to stay focused on their studies and classroom activities.
Inclusivity: Not all students may celebrate or have the means to participate in Halloween festivities. By not allowing costumes, we ensure that all students feel included and comfortable at school.
Safety: Some costumes may have accessories or components that pose safety risks, such as masks that obstruct vision or items that could cause tripping or other accidents.
Respect for others: We want to promote a respectful and positive school environment. Costumes can sometimes make others uncomfortable, and we want to avoid any potential issues.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in helping us create a productive and inclusive learning environment. Thank you for your continued support.
