Spring SSIS SEL Screener Scheduled for March 18th- Opt Out Link Below Spring SSIS SEL Screener Scheduled for March 18th- Opt Out Link Below

The Social Skills Improvement System Brief + Mental Health Scales (SSIS SEL screener) is a short screener that is completed by a student (grades 3-12), or their teacher (grades EC-2) or parents. The screener takes between 5 and 8 minutes to complete. The focus of the scales is a student’s social emotional learning (SEL) (including self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making) and, for students in grades K-12. emotional behavioral concern (internalizing, externalizing, and stress). The purpose of this online screener is to identify areas of strength and emotional behavioral concerns in students. This will help inform teachers and school leaders in planning Social Emotional Learning (SEL) instructional and programmatic support for students.

Dear NHS Staff, Students and Families,

Next Tuesday, March 11th is Junior Exam Day. All 11th grade students will need to be on campus in designated spaces to take one of three assessments (ACT, Accuplacer or ASVAB), chosen early this year. All grades 9, 10 and 12 grade students will have an Online Learning Day. See details linked here.

NHS has had a strong winter activities season with many state tournament send offs and the gathering of the Northfield community to celebrate the excellence of our student scholars, musicians, artists and athletes. We have so many reasons to be proud of our Raiders! The Boys Hockey Team is still alive in the state tournament and are scheduled to play on Saturday. The Boys Swim and Dive Team will be competing on Saturday at the U of M and the Olympic Weightlifting Team will be competing at the state tournament in Cannon Falls on Saturday. Good luck Raiders!

As we look ahead to next year, our district has been engaged in the budget prioritization/reduction process and developing recommendations for how we might reduce $6 million from the budget for fiscal year 2025-26. This is a difficult process that will result in the reduction of staff and services. Dr. Hillmann shared the draft plan with you earlier this week. Click here to view the budget prioritization plan. We will be seeking input from the community April 3, 2025.

  • Date: Thursday, April 3, 2025
  • Time: 6:00-8:30 pm
  • Location: Northfield Middle School Auditorium
  • You can view the agenda here

You can also provide feedback to the board via email using the board@northfieldschools.org email address. The board will formally consider the recommended reductions at its April 14 regular meeting and act on the final budget reductions at its April 28 regular meeting.

Sincerely,

Shane Baier

Trout Journey Pictures

Craig Johnson, Biology Teacher, has participated in the Classroom Trout Program for many years. This year, he is collaborating with TJ Austin, Fish, Wildlife and Forestry Teacher. They each have the equipment in their respective classrooms to support the project. Interested students in each classroom will help support this journey. If you have questions, email Craig Johnson at cjohnson@northfieldschools.org or TJ Austin at taustin@northfieldschools.org. We will provide a weekly update on progress between now and the Trout release date.

Mayor's Youth Council Update Mayor's Youth Council Update

Hello again from the Mayor’s Youth Council!

The City Council chose to reject bids for the new water treatment plant. The initial estimate in June 2024 for the construction cost was approximately $33 million. The bids that were presented to the Council in February 2025 were more than twice that amount. Council members considered the high property taxes already placed on community members. As a result, the Council felt it was irresponsible to move forward with the current construction bids. City Council remains committed to moving the project forward by beginning smaller construction projects for the site including a road and an outbuilding. The Council will likely request new project bids next year.

This year Northfield’s Environmental Quality Commission will table at the Northfield Earth Day celebration on Saturday April 26, 2025. For more information on the Earth Day Celebration visit https://northfieldearthday.com/

In other Northfield news, the Planning Commission rejected the Historical Preservation Commission’s recommendation to list Central Park as a historic location.
