Dear Adventure Students,

This week in math we will explore the connections between STEAM and Origami. Origami is a traditional Japanese art of paper folding. Traditional Origami uses one sheet of paper and no scissors. Origami has been practiced for centuries.

Many people don’t know that Origami is also used in the fields of math, engineering, and medicine. For example, the automobile industry used Origami principles to compactly fold the protective airbags into their vehicles. In the field of medicine, Origami principles were used to design and create a new heart stent to help patients. Origami’s use of symmetry, geometry, spatial reasoning, and precision have made this art valuable to creating many STEAM related products.

Using just a single piece of paper and the math concept of symmetry we will bring to life a few ocean animals from this week’s adventure!

Sincerely,

Your Ocean Adventure Team
