MARAUDER SPOTLIGHT
MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Welcome back! Last week, January 5 to 9, was a strong start to the new year and a great return to learning after winter break. On Monday, teachers had a productive workday, and on Tuesday, our staff took part in district-wide professional development with our School Improvement Plan partners. We continue to refine our instructional practices, working together to develop high-quality, interdependent tasks and add new strategies to lesson plans to increase student engagement and guide them to take ownership of their learning.
Students returned on Wednesday, which marked the start of the third quarter, and we began with an inspiring whole-school assembly featuring Dr. Tommie Mabry. His powerful message about overcoming challenges and persevering to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty set a positive tone. Later that day, we held grade-level meetings for all classes: 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th. Students received grade-specific information and a clear reminder about dress code, student conduct, hall pass usage, personal technology rules, including the required use of Yondr pouches for cell phones. Throughout the day, we reminded students about the importance of behavior, attendance, and GPA (BAG) data, which are key to success and staying on track for graduation. Thursday was back to a normal day of learning, and Friday’s snow day gave us an unexpected long weekend. I hope everyone enjoyed the extra time.
Looking ahead to this week, January 12 to 16, we will start ACCESS testing for our Multilingual Learners. This test is important for measuring growth and progress in learning English, so it is important for our MLL students to attend and do their best. Monday will be a Silver Day, and students will take part in Future Ready activities, looking over their personal BAG reports to reflect on how they did in Semester 1 and set goals for Semester 2. We encourage students to take charge of their learning and use this time to plan for success.
After-school tutoring will continue this week, and we hope students use this resource not only if they fall behind, but also to stay ahead. On Friday, January 15, we will start hall sweeps and tardy passes, so students should arrive on time and maintain good attendance. We will finish the week on Friday, January 16, with Marauder Pride Day. Students, staff, and community members are invited to show their school spirit by wearing orange and blue. Finally, enjoy another three-day weekend in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Let’s keep up the momentum, continue to get WINS, and make this quarter our best yet!

FROM THE FUTURE CENTER
A Note About College Applications and Post-Secondary Planning:
Senior students still needing help completing their college applications should see Mrs. Montez or Mr. Cooks in the Future Center. If students are not interested in attending college directly after high school, we still need to meet with you! There are lots of other opportunities for students who are interested in apprenticeships, internships, military, etc.
Students With Jobs Outside of School/Potential High School Credit:
For any student who is employed and has not filled out the application for high school credit in Schoolinks, please see Mrs. Montez or Mr. Cooks in the Future Center. Students who work a certain number of hours within a semester can earn high school credits.
The Future Center would also like to wish all students a great first week back!
