With Hurricane Kiko making its slow approach to the Hawaiian Islands, it’s a good time to review our family emergency plans. While we hope for the best, being prepared for a weather event like a hurricane is the best way to ensure the safety of our children and our community.

Here are some general preparedness tips to help you and your family get ready:

1. Create a Family Emergency Plan

2. Build an Emergency Kit Assemble a "Go-Kit" with essential supplies for at least 72 hours. Store these items in a waterproof, easy-to-carry container.

  • Water: One gallon per person per day for drinking and sanitation.

  • Food: A supply of non-perishable, easy-to-prepare food. Don't forget a manual can opener!

  • First-Aid: A comprehensive first-aid kit, including any necessary prescription medications.

  • Power: Flashlights, a battery-powered or hand-crank radio, and extra batteries.

  • Documents: Copies of important documents like insurance policies, identification, and medical records, stored in a waterproof bag.

  • Cash: Have a small amount of cash on hand, as ATMs may not be operational during power outages.

3. Prepare Your Home

  • Secure Outdoor Items: Bring in any outdoor furniture, toys, or decorations that could become projectiles in high winds.

  • Protect Windows: Consider installing storm shutters or boarding up windows with plywood. Note: Taping windows is not an effective method.

  • Clean Drains: Clear your gutters and downspouts to prevent flooding.

  • Charge Devices: Fully charge all your phones, power banks, and other electronics.

  • Fill the Tank: Keep your car's gas tank full in case you need to evacuate.

4. Stay Informed

  • Monitor Alerts: Pay close attention to alerts from local authorities and the National Weather Service.

  • Follow Directions: If officials issue an evacuation order for your area, leave immediately.

By taking these steps, we can all contribute to the safety and resilience of our community. In addition to school bulletins like this, we do have additional means of communication including automated phone messaging, text and email for emergency situations.
