Message from Principal and Assistant Principal. All School Reward Is Here!

It is hard to believe that next week is our last school week of 2022! Our students are excited with the upcoming season and we certainly have many great events happening to close out the year next week. Many classrooms will be having celebrations but we will also have some school wide events. On Wednesday, our students have earned an all school reward for hitting one of our roar goals. They have been showing their 3 R's consistently and it is time to celebrate. Staff will be having "sumo wrestling" matches. We've rented sumo suites and our whole school will be cheering on as staff get in the ring. It should be a lot of fun. Our 4th graders will also be traveling to perform on the grand staircase at the State House in Boston. This special event is back after a few year hiatus and is truly a memorable field trip. Our 4th graders will also be performing for our entire school on Friday to send us off to the winter break.

Thank You Message From Byam School Counselor Ms. O'Neil

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who has donated a gift to our families. Receiving 50 plus toys has warmed my heart and I know it will bring smiles to our students and their families. We are so grateful to all of you for your kindness and generosity this holiday season! Thank you again for making a students' holiday extra special.

Hallway/Cubbies Expectations Week

PBIS Hallway/Cubbies Week

Students reviewed our hallway and cubbies (coat/backpack hooks area) expectations with teachers and Mr. Fredette and Mrs. Dolan. They all did a great job listening and participating and we saw a marked difference in items staying off the hallway floors preventing tripping hazards and walking during the school day. We continue to positively work with students to walk during dismissal to their buses and car pickups.

Holiday Support

Byam Cares:

Every year we collect gift cards from Walmart, Target, or local grocery stores for our Byam Cares program. This program gives Byam families in financial need a boost during difficult financial times. While we use the gift cards mostly during the holidays, we also have times not related to holidays when families are in need.

Any family interested in donating a gift card can do so by donating a Walmart, Target, or local grocery store gift card. The gift card(s) can be put in a sealed envelope marked "Byam Cares" and brought into the Byam office. School counselor Lyndsey O'Neil and Byam school nurse Amy Regan are facilitating this project.

Health Tips from the Nurse's Office

As we move into the winter months, there are strategies to keep our school community safe and healthy. Remember to follow these simple precautions to prevent illness:

  • Stay home if feeling sick
  • Avoid contact with individuals who are sick
  • Avoid sharing cups and utensils
  • Wash hands frequently for at least 20 seconds with soap and water
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash

This is the time of year where we typically see an increase in the number of illnesses in our schools. Based on information from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, influenza (flu) activity is increasing nationally, and troubling early data showing drops in flu vaccine uptake this season, the CDC has issued an urgent reminder about the importance of vaccinating for flu. Hospitalization rates in kids for respiratory illnesses are among the highest seen at this time in about a decade so far this season.

Getting a flu shot is the most important action a person can take to prevent flu and its potentially serious complications. Everyone 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine as soon as possible to protect against the flu.

The flu vaccine:

  • Reduces the risk of flu illness
  • Can be given at the same time as a COVID-19 vaccine, for people who are due for both
  • Protects against four different flu viruses - even if an individual has already gotten the flu, other flu viruses are circulating and it’s possible to get flu more than once a season

Staying updated with the COVID-19 boosters will protect against the coronavirus and prevent serious illness. The COVID-19 vaccine and boosters are safe and effective. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the Massachusetts Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics strongly encourages vaccinating for the flu and COVID-19.

Additionally, health care providers have observed an increase in the number of cases of RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) in children in recent months. Infants and children may be particularly susceptible to seasonal respiratory viral infections during the 2022-2023 fall and winter because they have had limited previous exposure to these respiratory viruses. There has also been many cases of suspected norovirus illness. Please follow the preventative measures listed above to ensure the health and wellness of our school community!
