Hickory Ridge Highlights
September 27, 2026
Hickory Ridge Families,
First House Meeting
What an AMAZING first house meeting. The students met their new house mates and were able to work together. Check out our family recap to talk with your child about their house meeting experience.
WHAT IS IE TIME?
As a byproduct of our Strategic Plan, all of the BCSD elementary schools have a designated block of time during the day to provide students with targeted instruction based on their unique needs, as determined by a variety of data points. This block of time is called Intervention-Enrichment (IE) time. During this time, there is no new instruction happening in the classroom. The grade level teachers work together and flexibly group students to best meet their needs. Students do not necessarily stay with their homeroom teacher for a portion of this time. Students may receive instruction from multiple teachers, including an Intervention Specialists, Mrs. O'Deens - Reading Specialists, Mrs. Lalos - guidance counselor, or an office education aide.

Counselor's Corner - September
Welcome to a new school year at Hickory Ridge! I hope everyone has had a great start and your children are ready to learn and have fun! Please reach out to me if you need any support for your child or have any questions about anything. My contact information is listed below.
We will be continuing the Second Step lessons for all grade levels starting this month. We will be starting with Skills for Learning. This topic focuses on being ready to learn, paying attention, and working hard. Please continue to practice these skills at home with your child(ren). See the parent links (listed below in this newsletter) for more information on this topic (and others) and how you can work with your child on these concepts at home to help with their social emotional learning.
Routines and Schedules Start the Year Off Right
The start of a new school year is exciting. But it means kids and parents will need to make some adjustments. Here are some ways to get your family back into a good routine for the school year:
Set the rules. Make sure your kids know what you expect now that they are back in school. Set a specific time to do homework. Enforce rules for watching TV and playing video games. Set aside some time each day for reading.
Create a chart for the first few weeks of school–until your routines become habits. Give your child a gold star on days when they do everything without being asked.
Manage correspondence. The start of the school year means a lot of paper going between home and school. Set up a place where your child puts all the paperwork from school. Sign it and put it back in the backpack by the next day.
Keep track of schedules. Post a calendar where everyone will see it. Then have everyone write down their activities a sthey are scheduled. This will help you plan ahead. If your child knows a book report is due the day after a soccer game, they will see that they need to finish it early.
