An Update from Hough Elementary
January 9, 2026 Newsletter
Message from Principal Schumacher
Dear Hough Families,
Welcome back! We hope you and your children had a restful and refreshing break. It has been wonderful to see our students back in the building—reconnecting with friends, settling into routines, and jumping back into learning with energy and enthusiasm. Hough truly shines when our community is together, and we’re excited for all that lies ahead.
As we move forward this season, our Character Strong focus is perseverance—the ability to keep going even when things feel challenging. Throughout the school day, students will be encouraged to reflect on what perseverance looks like in learning, friendships, and problem-solving. Whether it’s tackling a tricky math problem, practicing a new skill, or navigating social situations, we’re helping students understand that effort, resilience, and a growth mindset matter just as much as the outcome.
We are also thrilled to share that children’s author Mat Hegarty will be visiting Hough next Friday, 1/16! He is the author and illustrator of several engaging children’s books. He lives happily in Vermont with his best buds and family. He writes graphic novels like 'Lumberjackula', ‘Indoor Kid', 'Martian Ghost Centaur', and ‘Unplugged and Unpopular'. Mat is dyslexic and struggled in school. He now travels the country talking to elementary and middle school students about the strengths of learning disabilities. During the 2023-2024 school year Mat and his family bought an RV and traveled all across the U.S. It was life-changingly amazing!
Thank you, as always, for your partnership and support. We look forward to a wonderful stretch of learning, growth, and celebration together.

Speech Tournament Information
The Speech Tournament will be held after school at Hough on Monday, March 9th. Your child will be assigned a time mid-late February with their after school time on March 9th to perform their selection at Hough. This year, students can perform in person solos, duets, or small groups. Students are encouraged to ask a parent, grandparent, older sibling, or trusted adult outside of school to act as a coach.
All student applications and coaching agreements are due electronically by Friday, January 16th at the latest. Students must bring their iPads to the meeting this Friday, January 9th to join the speech tournament Schoology group. This is where they will access all the information, scripts, and application form.
Love to watch kids perform a skit? Our Speech Tournament Coordinator, Mrs. Conant, is looking for parents to help to judge our Annual Speech Tournament on March 9, 2026 after school. If you are interested, please feel free to reach out to Mrs. Conant, jconant@barrington220.org, for more information.
