Dear Penn Brook families,

As we head into the final week before February vacation, I want to take a moment to thank you for your continued partnership and support. This time of year is always filled with busy schedules, winter weather, and lots of learning, and our students have shown tremendous effort and resilience.

In the days ahead, classrooms will remain focused on learning while also taking time to reflect on accomplishments and prepare for a well-deserved break. February vacation offers a wonderful opportunity for students to rest, recharge, and enjoy time with family and friends.

Thank you for all you do to support our school community. We are grateful for your involvement and commitment, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back refreshed and ready for the weeks ahead.

Wishing you a safe, relaxing, and enjoyable February vacation.

Warm regards,

Our Math Curriculum Council has been meeting monthly. The Council has developed shared goals and a vision for math instruction across grades K-5. We are currently reviewing samples of selected high-quality curricular math materials aligned with the Massachusetts Frameworks and our shared vision. Our next steps are to discuss the schedule for a possible pilot of materials and then schoolwide rollout of implementation. We will continue to provide updates as we move forward as a council.

Art

Kindergarten, first-, and second-grade students will explore artists who use hearts in their artwork, then create their own heart-inspired masterpieces. Third graders will study the imaginative style of artist Mary Blair and design colorful, Blair-inspired castles, complete with doors that open! Fourth- and fifth-graders will dive into the world of clay as they learn hand-building techniques to create beautiful pinch-pot sculptures. We can’t wait to see their creativity come to life!

Music

Titles for each song or chant are provided as helpful reminders. It is my hope that your child serves as the “teacher,” and that you or another loved one will interact musically by echoing them.

Kindergarten Songs: “Johnny Had One Friend” “Grandma’s Glasses”

First Grade Songs: “Charlie Over the Ocean”

Second Grade Songs: “Purple Light” “Go ‘Round the Mountain” “Bruder Jakob”

Third Grade Songs: “Miss White Had a Fright” “Yankee Doodle”

Fourth Grade Songs: “Oh My, Fish in the Sky” “Sing Me Another”

Fifth Grade Songs: “Sailor, Sailor on the Sea”

Media

This month, students will explore block coding using Scratch, ScratchJr, and/or Code.org, building problem-solving and creativity skills through fun, hands-on activities. Every Friday, students will also have the opportunity to check out library books to enjoy at home.
