Spanish Language and Culture (Mr. Fontalvo, Ms. Gonzalez)
Last week, our students learned new vocabulary related to the seasons and how to describe the weather in Spanish. Next week, they will have two formative assessments—one in reading and one in speaking—to show what they’ve learned.
As a school, we are practicing the strategy of annotating a text to support reading comprehension. We encourage families to practice this strategy at home—ask your child to underline or write short notes while reading in any language! It’s a great way to help them become more thoughtful readers

This week, students will continue to review the vocabulary for weather, seasons, months, and days of the week. On Tue., Nov. 18, students will complete 2FormB2, a reading comprehension formative assessment on clothing and weather. Later in the week, students will engage in an activity analyzing logical and illogical clothing choices based on the weather, season, and context. Students will complete 2PA3, an open-notes classwork activity identifying appropriate outfits based on seasonal and weather-related contexts. To end the week, students will be introduced to demonstrative adjectives and will practice applying them in sentences.
There will be new homework assignments on demonstrative adjectives and shopping vocabulary on SpanishDict.com, due Fri., Nov.17.

This has been an especially busy and productive week for our Spanish 2 students. We’ve learned a large amount of new vocabulary and have now made our way through four chapters of our class novel (substituting summaries for full chapters where needed).
Today, we are wrapping up the week by learning about political asylum and exploring the options available to the characters in our novel who are trying to bring their children to the United States.
Next week, we will finish both the novel and the unit, and students will take an end-of-unit test on Wednesday. The test will focus on key vocabulary, major events, and characters from the book.
Please encourage your child to review our Quizlet vocabulary set and re-read any chapters as needed to prepare.

Spanish Humanities, grade 7 (Ms. Henderson)
This week in Spanish Humanities, we continued reading Lazarillo de Tormes while practicing our new vocabulary. Students analyzed El Ciego’s treatment of Lázaro and discussed how these experiences have awakened Lázaro’s ability to outsmart and take advantage of his master.
Next week, we will have our first summative assessment of the second advisory. Students will be asked to write and record a letter from Lázaro to his mother, explaining what his life has been like with El Ciego and the ways he has learned to survive under such a cruel master.
Spanish Humanities, grade 8 (Ms. Wooten)
This week students continued to delve into Casa en Mango Street. We discussed implicit bias and machismo- what is it, how it looks, what it sounds like- and debated whether machismo is still prevalent in our society, using some statistics to support our thinking. Then students analyzed the vignette "mi nombre," interpreting the narrator's beliefs and attitudes about the traditional gender roles in her family. Next week, we will discuss several themes of the book and create a tracker in which students will begin to collect quotes and evidence of each theme, which will help them when it comes time to write an essay analyzing the development of a theme throughout the book.
The humanities trip is now open for enrollment and interested families should enroll by Dec 19th:

Students will be creating a weather report to show all they have learned. To prepare, students should spend at least 5 minutes reviewing every night to ensure a strong start to unit 2! Students have resources from class and/or on Canvas.
