Catching Kindness

This time of the school year always seems to go at warp speed as we find ourselves approaching the exciting, yet often busy holiday season. Amid the hustle and bustle, it's important to find time to pause and appreciate some of the simple moments of connection that bring us joy. Here at EES, we continue on with our Kindness Challenge, where we are taking the time to recognize the kind acts that students and staff are doing throughout the school days. Watching this turkey's feathers "grow" over the past week with new instances of kindness has definitely been bringing me joy!

Please complete and return the dismissal slip if you have not already!!

Starting after Thanksgiving break, EES will be implementing a system called "Pick Up Patrol" to help us track dismissals. This will allow guardians to change their child's dismissal plans electronically from their phone or computer-- No more notes or phone calls necessary! Please be on the lookout for an email early next week with additional information.

SPIRIT WEEK SPIRIT WEEK

Whether it's dressing in one color, sporting some crazy hair, or showing our MERSD pride--- it's clear our students and staff are full of spirit!

Author Visit: Hena Khan Author Visit: Hena Khan

This Tuesday, K-5 students welcomed award-winning author Hena (pronounced "Henna") Khan to EES. Hena describes herself as a Pakistani-American Muslim, and of her books are inspired by her life experiences, her culture and her faith. She writes everything from picture books to early and middle grade chapter books and most recently, her first ever graphic novel titled WE ARE BIG TIME. Hena's parents immigrated from Pakistan to Maryland. She was born in America and as a child she spent hours at the library but noticed that she never saw characters in books that looked like or represented her family's culture or faith. As a result, her books are centered around her Pakistani customs, her Islamic faith, community, friendships and family. Students were given the opportunity to ask Hena questions during her presentations and eight lucky students from 4th & 5th grades were able to enjoy a lunchtime chat with Hena. This Author Visit was fully funded by The Hooper Fund. In addition to funding the presentations, The Hooper Fund provided all 3rd, 4th and 5th graders with a signed copy of WE ARE BIG TIME. Ms. Silag said, "We have learned so much about writing, inspiration and both Pakistani and Muslim traditions from Hena's books and presentations. In particular, we noticed how alike we all are despite our different cultures and faith." And Hena thoroughly enjoyed her visit to EES! Thanks goes out to The Friends of EES, and especially Eliza Sharp for providing lunch for the author.
