LISD School Newsletter
From Dr. Martin....
Dear LISD Families,
I had the recent opportunity to travel with my husband to Japan, and I was away from school for the last eight work days. It was a wonderful trip and I have loads of appreciation for our administration and staff for handling things that are generally in my arena and couldn't wait for my return. I have much confidence in our team, and am grateful for all the big and little ways my colleagues stepped up with extra energy to make school run smoothly while I was away.
Travel is a privilege and always an incredible learning experience, but I'm happy to be back home on Lopez Island, and I was very excited to see staff and students at school today!
Have a fabulous week.
All my best,
Martha

Washington State Healthy Youth Survey
Lopez Island students grades 6 - 12 will participate in the Healthy Youth Survey (HYS) tomorrow, October 7. Youth in Washington State have been taking the HYS since 2002. The survey asks about how youth are doing, social relationships, mental health, substance use, risks for injury, and more. Communities, districts, schools, and public health agencies use survey results to inform policies and programs designed to support youth well-being. The HYS is a meaningful way for youth to guide the future of our state. Your youth’s participation is appreciated. More information - including flyers with Frequently Asked Questions can be found here.
Taste Washington Right in Our School Kitchen
Wednesday, October 8
On Wed 10/8 the school kitchen will be participating in Taste Washington Day. For this event we use as many locally sourced ingredients as possible for our menu. The lunch menu on 10/8 will be: Pasta with a creamy basil sauce and locally caught pink salmon. There will be a pumpkin pie bar for a sweet treat to go with it.
As part of Taste Washington day we will also be participating in what is called the Washington Apple Crunch. The Crunch is a celebration of Washington's apple industry. At the end of Elementary lunch (when the students are out for recess) we will distribute an apple to each student and take a big coordinated bite all at the same time! This event is being participated in by many schools across the state, but we are lucky to have such a dedicated team of gleaners who provide us with local fruit at no cost.

Students Can Earn Community Service Hours
This is such a fun family event open to students of all ages and their families -- but to make it run smoothly the PTSA needs some help. Needs:
- 6-10 students to help with setup directly afterschool
- 6-10 students to help with cleanup from 6:45-finished (probably about 1 hour).
Please reach out to co-coordinator Serina Adams serinaadams@gmail.com to sign up.
Lopez Village Will Be "Aglow" Again this Year
Help the glow return to Lopez! Every Saturday, join Debbie Collins and friends in the library’s Community Room for a new round of luminary-making. From 10am to noon, we’ll gather around tables full of supplies, laughter, and creativity. Together, we’ll craft lanterns that will bring warmth and light to our long winter nights. These luminary work sessions are open to all ages, kids under 12 with an adult please. Everything you need is provided. Come for the crafting, stay for the camaraderie.
