Rocket Reflections
Dear CCPS Community:
As we wrap up the first nine weeks of the school year, I want to take a moment to celebrate the many successes we have already achieved together. The first quarter of the year always brings excitement, new routines, and opportunities for growth; this year has been no exception.
Our students have been working hard in the classroom, on the field, and in countless extracurricular activities. Their achievements are a direct reflection of their dedication, the support of their families, and the guidance of our talented teachers and staff. I am extremely proud of the excellence, accountability, collaboration, and integrity that our students and staff demonstrate daily.
The end of the first nine weeks offers a valuable opportunity for reflection. Report cards allow us to celebrate accomplishments while also identifying areas for continued growth. At CCPS, we believe learning is a journey defined by progress, not perfection, and we are dedicated to supporting each student every step of the way. Together with our families, we remain committed to helping every child reach their fullest potential.
As we enter the second quarter, I encourage all of us, students, staff, families, and community members, to move forward the energy, optimism, and teamwork that make Craig County Public Schools a special place. Together, we are working to build a strong school community rooted in growth and greatness for each student and each other.
Thank you for your continued support of our students and schools. I am excited to see what the rest of the school year holds.
Sincerely,
Jason A. Wheeler, Ph.D.

Instruction
Building Strong Readers: MES teachers are using small-group reading rotations to target specific literacy skills, ranging from phonics and fluency to vocabulary and comprehension. Through the use of read-alouds, guided practice, and meaningful opportunities to respond, students are developing confidence and independence as readers. Teachers continually use data to inform instruction, tailor lessons to individual needs, and ensure that every student receives the support and challenge necessary to grow as a lifelong learner.
Market Day: Mrs. Reeder’s Social Studies students showcased their creativity and entrepreneurial spirit by designing products at home to “sell” to classmates and teachers. Their offerings included everything from cookies and cake pops to bookmarks and even private football lessons. This engaging, hands-on project brought economic concepts to life, helping students connect classroom learning to real-world experiences.

A Visit from Food Country: Jeffrey Bacon from Food Country visited our students to share his experiences about working in the grocery industry and serving the local community. Mr. Bacon, who currently manages Food Country and previously managed Krispy Kreme Donuts, spoke about the importance of customer service, teamwork, and responsibility in the workplace. To top off the visit, Mr. Bacon brought along delicious cookies for everyone to enjoy.
CCES Visit: Kindergarten students had a special visit from Heather Matheney, a paramedic with Craig County Emergency Services. She spoke with the class about her important role in helping people who are sick or injured and even demonstrated how to take blood pressure. The students were fascinated by her presentation and had a wonderful time coloring a picture she brought to share!

Instruction
Data-Driven Instruction in Action: CCHS teachers are taking a proactive approach to student success by closely analyzing data to inform instruction and address the unique needs of every learner. Teachers are working together to align lessons to the Comprehensive Instructional Program (CIP) to maintain consistency, rigor, and high expectations across all classrooms. Both middle and high school teachers are working diligently to design targeted, engaging lessons that build upon student strengths, close learning gaps, and ensure that every Rocket continues to learn, grow, and achieve.
Lexia Tutoring: CCHS is utilizing Lexia as an evidence-based tool to support targeted reading instruction and tutoring. Through individualized, data-driven lessons, Lexia helps students strengthen foundational literacy skills and make measurable progress toward grade-level proficiency. This program is an important part of our division’s commitment to providing personalized interventions that ensure every Rocket reaches their full potential.
Hands-On Exploration
Career Quest: Our 7th-grade students participated in Career Quest held on October 8, 2025. This annual event is hosted by the Greater Roanoke Workforce Development Board and was held at the Berglund Center in Roanoke, VA. This large-scale, high-energy experience brought together hundreds of students from across the region to explore a wide range of career pathways. Despite the hustle and bustle, our Rockets had a fantastic time engaging with hands-on exhibits, meeting professionals, and discovering exciting possibilities for their futures. Learn more here.

The festival provided an opportunity for students to shine outside the classroom, celebrate their accomplishments, and connect with the broader community in a fun and festive atmosphere. Their participation not only entertained the crowd but also showcased the incredible talents and accomplishments of our students.
Sweet Treats at the Fall Festival: Mrs. Cox and her students represented CCHS at the Fall Festival with a delicious selection of homemade baked goods. Their booth drew plenty of visitors eager to purchase cupcakes, cookies, and candy apples. The event offered students a fun, hands-on opportunity to engage with the community while supporting their school and Culinary Arts.
"I Voted" Stickers: Mrs. Frazier’s art students at CCHS recently put their creativity to work by designing original “I Voted” stickers that will be handed out to voters on Election Day. This project gave students the opportunity to combine artistic expression with civic engagement, encouraging their artwork and the democratic process. CCPS House System
House System: Since the start of the school year, students in grades K–7 have been participating in our new House System—an exciting initiative designed to build community, teamwork, and school pride while reinforcing our school-wide expectations: S.O.A.R.
- Safety First
- Outstanding Attitude
- Act Responsibly
- Respect
To support our students, we’ve attached the S.O.A.R. Expectations Matrix for both schools, which outlines the positive behaviors expected in various areas of the school. We encourage families to review this together at home so everyone understands what it means to S.O.A.R. each day.
Ask your student which House they belong to, how many points they’ve earned, and where their House currently ranks on the leaderboard! Since its launch, the House System has created an atmosphere of excitement and friendly competition, helping students stay motivated, connected, and focused on demonstrating positive behavior both in and out of the classroom.

Inclement Weather
As the weather turns colder, it is important to remember that the decision to close, delay, or dismiss school early due to inclement weather is one of the most important and most challenging decisions we make. The safety of our students and staff remains our highest priority in every situation. Each decision is the result of careful monitoring and collaboration with multiple local partners, including the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), law enforcement, and emergency management officials.
Weather can change quickly, and conditions can vary greatly across our county. While every effort is made to get it right, there may be times when the outcome is less than perfect. We sincerely appreciate your understanding and patience as we make these difficult decisions.
**Please know that student and staff safety are always at the forefront of every decision.**
How the Decision is Made
1. Monitoring Conditions
-
Weather forecasts are monitored continuously via the National Weather Service, local meteorologists, and VDOT reports.
-
Conditions such as snow, ice, flooding, wind, and temperature are assessed the night before and early morning, beginning as early as 4:00 a.m.
2. Road Inspections
-
Key roads are driven across the county to evaluate road conditions.
-
Particular attention is given to bridges, shaded areas, and secondary roads, which tend to freeze first and remain hazardous longer.
3. Consultation and Coordination
-
The superintendent consults with transportation and maintenance staff, as well as other neighboring superintendents, to understand local and regional conditions.
-
Input is also gathered from VDOT crews, law enforcement, and emergency management officials.
4. Timing and Communication
-
CCPS strives to make a decision by 5:30 a.m. at the lastest, allowing families and staff time to adjust morning routines. Our goal is made to make the decision the night before.
-
If conditions worsen during the day, CCPS may decide to release students early, in coordination from principals and transportation staff to ensure safe arrival home.
5. Key Considerations
-
Student and bus driver safety on roads
-
The timing and type of precipitation (snow, sleet, ice, freezing rain)
-
Road and parking lot conditions at CCPS
-
Temperature and wind chill for students waiting at bus stops
-
The ability of maintenance crews to clear parking lots and sidewalks in time for arrival
6. Communication:
- Once a decision is made, notifications are sent immediately via:
- School Messenger calls/texts/emails
- CCPS website and social media
- Local news and radio outlets
CCPS Inclement Weather Codes
Virtual Learning Days
Craig County Public Schools reserves the right to implement virtual learning days when schools are closed due to inclement weather. This approach helps ensure that instruction continues and valuable learning time is not lost. It also helps the division meet the Virginia Department of Education’s requirement of a minimum of 990 instructional hours, thus reducing the need to add extra days or extend the school year later in the spring.
**Notifications will be shared through official division communication channels**
