Career Exploration Starts in Middle School
Early career exploration should be fun and engaging; it’s about showing students the wide variety of options available to them and helping them figure out what sparks their interest, what they’re good at and what different careers look like day-to-day. This is also a time when they will need to plan and choose their high school courses, some of which are specialized pathways to a particular area of post-secondary study or career and technical education. Career-focused exploration opportunities help students to not only understand the range of options open to them, but to see the relevance of what they’re doing and learning in school. Throughout middle school, students continue to build self-awareness, learn about potential careers, and develop a plan for reaching future goals. (ACTE and Forbes 2024)
Why Career Exploration is important!
- The State of Michigan now requires that each student identify career goals and a plan of action to achieve them.
- In 2018, several bills were passed in the legislature that require school districts to take a more active role in assisting students as they prepare for their future education and careers.
- Beginning in 2019, the board of a school district or public school academy shall now ensure curriculum incorporates grade-appropriate instruction on career development at each grade level for ALL students in grades K-12.
Michigan Department of Education has provided guidance for this work through the Michigan Career Development Model (MCDM). The MCDM provides guidance on common language and suggested strategies to incorporate career development.
