Chronicles of Ori: An African Epic
By Harmonia Rosales. Recommended by Royal Montgomery, Reference Librarian. Nominated for the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work – Fiction, Chronicles of Ori reimagines cherished African myths in a sweeping epic that stretches from the creation of the universe to the era of colonialism and resistance. Brought vividly to life through Rosales’s striking artwork, this captivating graphic novel offers a fresh perspective on timeless stories. Kirkus Reviews praises it as “a lavish, eye-catching rethinking of ages-old stories,” and its rich storytelling and stunning visuals are sure to engage readers for years to come.
The Other Bennet Sister: A Novel
By Janice Hadlow. Recommended by Alexis Payne, Circulation Administrative Specialist. Now a hit series on BritBox/BBC One and a NPR Concierge Best Book of the Year! Long overshadowed by her sisters in Pride and Prejudice, Mary Bennet finally takes center stage in this engaging reimagining of Jane Austen’s classic. Intelligent, bookish, and often underestimated, Mary embarks on a journey of self-discovery that leads her beyond the confines of her family’s expectations. As she navigates love, independence, and her place in the world, she learns that true fulfillment comes from accepting herself. Thoughtfully drawn and richly nuanced, Mary emerges as a compelling heroine in a novel that offers both emotional depth and a deeply satisfying conclusion.
The Widows of Malabar Hill
Set in 1920s Bombay, this atmospheric historical mystery introduces Perveen Mistry, the city’s first female lawyer. When she is called upon to review a suspicious inheritance for three Muslim widows living in seclusion, what begins as a routine legal matter soon unfolds into a murder investigation. Inspired in part by India’s first woman attorney, this richly detailed novel vividly captures the cultural complexity of early twentieth-century Bombay while launching a compelling new mystery series featuring an intelligent and determined sleuth.
