Spence Elementary FACE Newsletter
Check out what we are working at Spence Elementary!
Literacy Week
Next week is literacy week! We will spend time talking about books, reading, and sharing our favorite books. Please remind your student to bring in their favorite book to share with the class.
Science
This week, we will be wrapping up our unit on wind and water energy. We'll begin exploring the steps of the scientific method as well as spending time developing testable questions, understanding a hypothesis, and taking time to make sense of different variables within an experiment. As the year progresses, we'll be using this lesson as a foundation for carrying out valid experiments.
Math
We'll spend more time as needed on area and perimeter before moving on to multi-step word problems. We will put everything together that we have learned to make sense of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division within word problems. We'll spend time noticing what is important, what the question is asking us, and plans to carry through solving the problem. Check out three practice problems below to work on with your learner.
Reading
Next week, we will be reading historic texts and learning about real problems that people faced. Within this work, we will be using context clues to make sense of unknown words, using sentence starters to notice when people are impacting the actions of others, and paying close attention to how other factors can cause a reaction (nature). See the link below for the text that we will be working with next week.
Harvesting Hope Journeys Text
Students may read this text with you at home to prepare for our quiz on Friday!
Writing
This week, we will spend time working on "trash or treasure". With this strategy, we keep our prompt in our brains and sift through our evidence, trying to think, "what is most important? What can I leave behind?" We'll spend time discussing this technique and apply it to our own work. We'll take our thinking work and then write an essay!
Want A Way To Help Your Writer?
Practice 10 text excerpts with your learner, looking for supporting details. We are CONSTANTLY working on this in class.
