Principal's Message
Hello Cheston Cougar Families and Friends.
Welcome back to school! We are going to try something new this year. We realized that we needed to up our communication game to parents...so we decided to have a weekly newsletter.
This is newsletter one for the school year. We plan on having a newsletter every week. The newsletter will include important information so you know what is going on at our school. We decided on this program as it is super easy to use and had a free translation feature for those who need different languages. SWEET!
This newsletter also signals the start of the 2022-2023 school year and I hope you can tell we are so excited to have the students back in school.
All opening day letters were mailed out which included your student's teacher's name and room number.. Transportation also mailed out letters this week to provide information for transportation for your child.
Mrs. Gaumer and I are so excited to bring you the news of Cheston!!
So...stay tuned and we hope to see all of you on Thursday (8/25) at Open House/K Orientation!
Mr. Yanders and Mrs. Gaumer

Updated COUGAR CODE: Student Behavior System
At Cheston, we use a daily points chart that matches 3 levels of behavior...
ORANGE
GREEN
BLUE
We have modified the chart and want you to be the first to know!
This year we are looking for all students to have the minimum weekly points in the GREEN category. This allows each student a "reward" on Friday.
Those students who do their best to consistently meet all expectations throughout the week can qualify for ORANGE STATUS. Multiple ORANGE weeks qualifies them for extra celebrations at the end of each trimester!
Weekly, a student may struggle to meet the expectations, and his/her behavior and learning may be impacted. Those students who earn a weekly BLUE rating will receive additional support to become more successful. Goal setting, weekly/daily check-ins, and parent feedback are key parts needed to assist those students.
So...as you notice... this is a change from last year! Last year, it was the expectation that all students were on orange.....now the expectation is that students are on green and work towards orange!!
LAMP
Tuesday, August 30 - DAY 2
Wednesday, August 31 - DAY 3
Thursday, September 1 - DAY 4
Friday, September 2 - No School
All elementary schools run on a 5-day rotating LAMP schedule.
*DAY 1 may not be Library.
Please reach out to your child's teacher about which class falls on a given day.
NURSES NOOK (Mrs.Biggs)
Welcome Back to School! I am excited to begin another school year. Please know that I am here to support your family. Please call, email, or stop in with any questions or concerns. If your child has had a change in health status, please let me know as soon as possible so that I can provide any nursing support they may need.
A couple of reminders:
Physical exam reports are required for all new students. An exam done within the past year can be accepted. All physical exam reports are requested no later than October 1. If you need help to access this service for your student, please let me know and I can try to help you.
Dental exam reports are required for all students in grades K/1, 3 and 7. An exam done within one year of the required grade can be accepted.
If your child needs Medication During School Hours please follow EASD medication policy as described in the student handbook. If you have questions or need assistance, please reach out to me. Remember, for safety reasons, children are not permitted to carry medication to/from school. An adult must deliver medication to the school nurse for administration. I will be accepting medication with completed Medication Authorization forms at our Open House evening on August 25.
Important Health Forms can be found on the Cheston Website. Select “Our School” then select “Health Room”. Links to the forms are towards the bottom of the page.
Monitoring Health and Illness Trends: I monitor student health and illness trends closely. If your child is feeling sick, please keep them home from school. If you need guidance in deciding if your child is well enough to come to school, you may call me in the morning and we can talk it through. I am in my office by 8:05 each morning unless I am attending a meeting. You can leave a message on my phone if I do not answer and I will call you back as soon as possible.
I hope that you have had a healthy and relaxing summer. I am looking forward to seeing you all again very soon!
