KMS WEEKLY UPDATE

Dear Parents & Guardians,
KMS will implement an Extended Advisory Bell Schedule on Monday, February 12. This will allow each grade level to conduct a short student assembly to acknowledge and present a certificate to all A and A/B Honor Roll students for Semester 1.
We have attached the schedule below for your convenience.
Also, as a reminder, we value your thoughts and input, and would greatly appreciate your feedback on the School Climate & Connectedness Survey (SCCS). One family member per student in a school should take the survey.
Last year, only 2% of KMS families completed the SCCS. This year, our goal is to get at least 50% of families to complete the survey.
Thank You,
Geoff Smith, Principal
Rena Rankin, Assistant Principal

6TH GRADE UPDATES
Dear KMS Families:
KIBSD Health education is an essential part of each student's overall education. The health program will strive to develop healthy individuals who contribute positively to self, family, and community. This philosophy includes grade appropriate mental, emotional, physical, social, sexual, and consumer health.
This letter is to inform you that we will be studying the following 6th grade sexual health topics on March 4th, 2024. As per school board policy, BP6142.l, Family Life/Sex Education, you have the right to review any instructional materials and excuse your child, in writing, from any portion of the class.
Unit 4: Sexual Health and Wellness
1. Practice appropriate hygiene habits.
Objectives:
• PHWl.8.1 Summarize the benefits of good hygiene practices for promoting health and maintaining positive social relationships.
2. SHl.8.27 Summarize basic male and female reproductive body parts and their functions.
The KIBSD health curriculum is currently undergoing a curriculum review process. Until the new curriculum has been formally approved and adopted, we are continuing to use the currently adopted curriculum. Please feel free to contact Theresa Miller, the KMS sixth grade counselor, if you have questions or concerns at theresa.miller@kibsd.org.
Thank you so much for your partnership with Kodiak Middle School in building strong family and community partnerships.
With Warm Aloha,
Theresa Miller

8TH GRADE UPDATES
MRS. NORTON'S US HISTORY CLASS
Dear Parents,
I am happy to report most students maintain high expectations for their classwork. They expect to get an 'A' and work with that goal in mind. I also have heard from parents that similar expectations are shared as I am often asked, "What can my student do to raise their grade?"
The simple answer: Complete assignments as directed and turn them in on time.
Late or missing assignments and not following directions are the number one reasons for students earning a grade below expectations.
For example, Comparison Essays were due Block 2 of this last week. 42% of all essays were turned in on time. Students were given two class periods to work on this 3 paragraph assignment. In addition, they were provided with outlines, examples, and a scoring rubric to help guide their writing.
Going forward this week, all on-time essays will receive feedback on Monday. Essays submitted on time will have this week and only this week to reflect, revise, edit, and resubmit for partial credit. (Due Friday, February 16)
Late essays will be graded and returned as time allows. All revisions for partial credit are due by Friday regardless of when they were returned.
Students who were absent this past week during Block 2 or Friday may turn in their essay upon their return to school. (Extensions due to absences may be provided as needed and discussed with Mrs. Norton.)
As always, my room is open for students during Recess on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.
Thank you for your continued support of your students.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Norton

VISITOR & VOLUNTEER PROCEDURE
KIBSD Schools are excited to welcome our visitors and volunteers to the different schools.
If you have not visited one of our schools before or have been coming for a long time, we have made some minor changes to standardize our process throughout the schools.
There will now be a sign-in binder you will be asked to sign, along with the name tag you are used to wearing. We ask for your patience, if we have not seen you before, you will be asked to present an ID when you sign in.
All non-KIBSD employees in the buildings will be asked to use staff facilities, not the student washrooms.
We also want to say good-bye when you leave so we are asking everyone to stop by the office to sign out.
ATTENDANCE, CHECK-OUT, & DROP-OFF PROCEDURES
ATTENDANCE LINE:
Please use this option to let us know that your child is going to be absent, late, or if you're picking them up early. This is OPTION 1 when calling the school at 907-486-7460.
We check the voicemails every hour.
CHECKING STUDENTS OUT:
Please call in the morning to let us know that you will be checking your student out early. Press the attendance line (OPTION 1) to leave a message. A pass will be given to your student so they can be ready when you arrive. You will come to the front entrance, ring the bell, and sign them out in the office.
DROPPING OFF LUNCH/ITEMS TO STUDENTS:
Please be sure to drop off lunch to students PRIOR to their lunch time.
When dropping off any items to students, please do so BEFORE the class they need it, and we will call them to the front office during passing period.
