Literacy

Students are doing amazing things with letters and writing. They are encouraged to all write their name on their own or with a model. Students are working on letter formation, letter identification, and letter sounds. They are being encouraged to draw and write in various areas of the classroom schedules.

Students are exploring print in the environment. They are making connections to things in the classroom and outside that have meaning.

Ways to support this at home...

- Talk about children's environment

- Put names around the house so they can find them.

- Label things around the house.

- Write their name in yellow (marker, pencil) and have them write inside the lines

- Have letters around the house or car

- Talk about what letters/words they see on signs or at the store

Math

Both classes are working on rote counting to 20. They are taking a count of students in the class. They are working on numbers with our daily calendar routines. Students are encouraged to start counting at a different part of the number line and then count on from that point.

Students are exploring various ways to sort objects, grouping by similarities. They are working on counting one to one and recognizing that many objects/people can make up a group. We began simple patterns.

Ways to support this at home...

- Count objects around the house

- Have them hide and count toys

- Line up toys and have them count them in the line

- Count family members

- Sort toys by different characteristics

- Starting simple patterns- AB AABB

Social Emotional Growth

Students are working hard on ways to recognize their feelings and how they can address those feelings once they arise. The language that we use is, "it is okay to be mad but how can we work through it." We are working hard on the daily schedule and school routines. You can ask your child what they like to do at these times- literacy groups, free choice, math, mindfulness.

Students are all at various degrees of their social and emotional growth. Recognizing that students are all learning is important. We want to build up their confidence and allow them to try new things. We are trying to teach them that everyone make mistakes and we are all working together.

Creating a classroom community is a big way to aide with student accountability. Parents and families are a part of that community. Working together we can ensure that students will grow and learn.

Try to talk to your children about their feelings while also validating how they feel, meaning it is okay to feel angry, but let's think of some ways to calm down also.
