🐾 Why Start the Year with a photo of the Class of 2026?
You might wonder why I would start our first newsletter of the year with a photo of the Class of 2026. The answer is simple—our newest Panther alumni are starting something new, too.
While we prepare to welcome students back to WHS, our 2026 graduates are beginning their journeys beyond our walls. Many are heading to college, some to military boot camp or training, and others into the workforce.
Graduation is a wonderful time to celebrate them, but I always think of our graduates again at the start of the next school year because this is when their next chapter truly begins—taking the skills, experiences, and support they gained here and putting them to use on their own.
Whether you know a 2026 graduate or not, take a moment to send some positive Panther vibes their way as they begin this exciting next chapter.
Class of 2026, we are proud of you. Once a Panther, always a Panther. Now go Own the Moment! 🐾❤️
ATTENTION CLASS OF 2030!
As you make final preparations for the start of high school, we wanted to send out a few reminders concerning class t-shirt sales, class dues and joining our Class of 2030 sportYou!
Class of 2030 t-shirts will still be available for purchase in the high school Counseling Office during lunches and before or after the school day. T-shirts are $15 each and are a great way to show our class spirit and support of one another at sporting events!
Class dues can also be paid in the Counseling Office before or after school or during lunches. They are $20 per year (9th through 11th there are no fees for senior year) or if you would prefer to pay them all at once they are $60 total.
Attached is the information concerning our class sportsYou. Please join as soon as possible so that you are able to receive the most up to date information concerning class events like: homecoming float building, hallway decorating, powder puff football and volleyball and much more!
Thanks,
Mrs. Kinzler & Mrs. Dawson
❤️ A Personal Thank You to Mrs. Teri Richcreek
Six years ago, I walked into WHS as the new principal, excited to be in Watervliet but also nervous about what was ahead. From my previous experience, I knew that one of the most important people to my success would be my secretary—and on that first day, I didn't know Teri at all.
Looking back, I could not have been more fortunate.
The last six years of Teri's incredible 26-year career at Watervliet have been some of the best years of my career as an administrator. Her ability to think ahead, attention to detail, work ethic, sense of humor, early mornings, late evenings, and absolute dedication to our students and staff have been invaluable. I can sincerely say that much of the success WHS has experienced during my time here is because of Teri and the work she has done behind the scenes every single day.
Teri has been much more than my secretary—she has been my partner in this work and someone I knew I could depend on every day. I will miss her tremendously, as I know so many others will.
Teri, thank you for everything you have done for me, WHS, and generations of Panthers. I wish you nothing but happiness in your well-deserved retirement. And while she may officially be retired, I have a feeling we will still see her around WHS. ❤️🐾
Congratulations, Teri. Once a Panther, always a Panther.

🎓 Last-Minute Dual Enrollment Opportunity at WHS!
We have an exciting last-minute Dual Enrollment opportunity available right here at Watervliet High School!
Students have the opportunity to take CIS (COMPUTER INFORMATION SYSTEMS) 100 through Lake Michigan College (LMC) with instructor Kyle Kelley. Even better, the course is offered on-site at WHS during 7th hour on Wednesdays, making it a convenient way for students to earn college credit while still in high school.
If you are interested in adding CIS 100 to your schedule, please see Mrs. Tyler right away or email her as soon as possible. Because this is a last-minute opportunity, interested students should reach out quickly!

This year, before we reach out to our usual sponsors, we wanted to give our students and families the first opportunity! 🐾 Panthers Give Back Through Impact Watervliet!
Last Friday, our student-athletes took part in Impact Watervliet, a special day dedicated to community service and giving back to the community that supports us throughout the year.
Our athletes spent the day working together, lending a hand, and making a positive impact throughout Watervliet. It was a great opportunity for our Panthers to demonstrate that being part of a team is about more than what happens on the field or court—it is also about leadership, service, teamwork, and taking pride in our community.
We are proud of our student-athletes for representing Watervliet with hard work and Panther Pride!
Check out some of the pictures from the day below! 📸🐾❤️
FAFSA RECOGNITION FOR WHS and the Class of 2026!
We are incredibly proud of the Class of 2026 for achieving a 100% FAFSA completion rate! Every member of the graduating class completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)—an accomplishment worth celebrating!
Completing the FAFSA is an important step in helping students understand and access the financial resources that may be available to them after high school, including grants, scholarships, work-study opportunities, and federal student loans.
As a reminder, FAFSA completion is a graduation requirement for the Class of 2027, but it is about much more than checking off a requirement. Completing the FAFSA helps put our Panthers in the best possible position to pursue their plans after graduation, whether that means a four-year university, community college, trade or technical program, or another educational opportunity.
Congratulations, Class of 2026! You set the bar at 100%, and we are so proud of you! ❤️🐾

🎉 91 Freshmen Attend Annual Freshman Orientation Day!
We were excited to welcome 91 members of the Class of 2030 to Watervliet High School for our annual Freshman Orientation Day!
A huge thank you goes out to the 25 junior and senior mentors who stepped up to help make the day a success. Our mentors participated in training during the morning and then spent nearly four hours working directly with our freshmen. They facilitated games, led activities, answered questions, and shared their experiences about everything from classes and high school expectations to athletics, clubs, Dual Enrollment, Early Middle College, and much more!
Our freshmen did a terrific job as well! They played games, laughed, met new classmates, learned a little along the way, received their schedules, practiced opening their lockers, toured the building, and had the opportunity to become more comfortable with what it means to be a high school student.
Most importantly, they had the chance to see that there are plenty of people at WHS ready to help them along the way.
Thank you to our mentors for giving their time and energy to our newest Panthers, and congratulations to our freshmen on a great first day at WHS! We can't wait to welcome you back for an amazing first day of school! 🐾❤️
THANK YOU MENTORS!

A Watervliet Public Schools Tradition Carries On--By Greg Krell
A Watervliet Public Schools tradition carries on...
By
Greg Krell
Meeting for the 106th time, the Watervliet All Class Reunion met Saturday, August 15th in the high school cafeteria. Fellowship and memories were alive during the social and lunch hours.
The youngest Watervliet graduates were from the Class of 2008: Samantha Crumb and Shawn Campbell. Donna (Collins) Hays was the oldest graduate present, representing the Class of 1956. Over all, four decades of alumni were in attendance: the 1950s, 1960, 1970s, along with the 2000s.
The short program prior to lunch featured three speakers. Newly hired Watervliet Public Schools (WPS) Superintendent, Craig Thornton; Barb (Flaherty) Schofield on behalf of the WPS Foundation for Excellence; and Watervliet Athletic Director, John Guillean.
Mr. Thornton, hired this past summer, began by introducing himself. He provided an update on the 2025 bond, along with updates on all four of the districts buildings. Also mentioned was the long WPS history and of moving that history forward.
Barb mentioned that the Foundation is in the process of securing funds for an outdoor classroom.
Finally, Athletic Director Guillean mentioned the dates for three of the important varsity football games. The WPS Athletic Hall of Fame game - Thursday, September 3; Homecoming - Friday, September 25; and the long running "rivalry" game with Coloma - Friday, October 16. The game this year is at Coloma.
Memorabilia was on display for the enjoyment of everyone, including the two oldest items in the WPS possession - the school bell from the late 1880s, and an all school photo from 1921. Also, class composite photos and yearbooks were available.
Anyone that attended or graduated from Watervliet is eligible to attend, along with their spouses. The reservation form for next years reunion will be available in the spring on the Watervliet All Class Reunion page on Facebook. The reunion will be held Saturday, August 21, 2027.
Pictured, left to right - 2008 graduates Samantha Crumb and Shawn Campbell, along with 1956 graduate Donna (Collins) Hays. These were the youngest and oldest Watervliet graduates present at the Watervliet All Class Reunion, held this year on Saturday, August 15th.
After graduation, Donna received a degree in Education from Michigan State University, graduating in 1960. She used her degree in two other districts before returning to Watervliet for the '62-'63 school year. The first half of the year found her teaching 1st grade. The second half of the year was spent in Berlin, Germany with her husband, a member of the United States Army. Beginning with the '63-'64 school year, Donna would be teaching Kindergarten at Watervliet for 30 years.
Samantha was active in both the marching and concert bands while a student here. Participating in the marching band competitions at Ford Field in Detroit all four years is a cherished memory of hers.
Athletically inclined, Shawn was a member of the football, basketball, baseball, and track teams. A career batting average of .450 is an accomplishment he is very proud of.

HANDBOOK REVIEW IN ALL ENGLISH CLASSES THE FIRST WEEK OF SCHOOL
📖 Student Handbook & Expectations
During the first week of school, Ms. Powers will be reviewing the following Student Handbook slides with all students. These slides highlight some of the most important expectations, procedures, and safety guidelines that will help us start the year successfully and maintain a safe, positive learning environment for everyone.
We ask that parents and guardians please take a few minutes to review these expectations with your child as well. When school and home work together to reinforce clear and consistent expectations, we give our students the best opportunity to make good choices and have a successful year.
Thank you for your partnership and for helping us start the year strong! ❤️🐾

PICK UP AND DROP OFF/NEW BUS LOOP
🚌🚗 Important Drop-Off, Pick-Up & Student Parking Information
🚌🚗 Important Drop-Off, Pick-Up & Student Parking Information
Please be aware that the front of Watervliet High School is now our bus loop. For the safety of our students, there will be NO student drop-off or pick-up by car in front of the high school. This area is reserved for buses only.
Parent Drop-Off & Pick-Up: All parents and guardians should drop off and pick up students on the cafeteria/gym side of the building.
Student Parking: All student parking is also located on the cafeteria/gym side of the building. Every vehicle driven to school by a student must have a WHS parking tag. Students should have a tag displayed in their vehicle by the end of the first week of school.
The first parking tag is FREE. Any additional or replacement tags are $5 each. Students should stop by the Main Office and see a secretary to receive their parking tag. CARS MUST BE REGISTERED IN THE MAIN OFFICE WITH A TAG BY THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 3RD.
Please help us keep our Panthers safe by following the new traffic pattern and keeping the front bus loop clear. Thank you for your cooperation! 🐾
📱 Important Update: Sports, Clubs & Activity Communication
As we begin the new school year, we want to make sure families know about an important change regarding communication for WHS sports teams, clubs, classes, and other school-sponsored activities.
There will no longer be separate social media pages associated with individual WHS teams, clubs, classes, or programs. Instead, coaches and advisors will use SportsYou to communicate directly with students and families.
If your child participates in a sport, club, or activity, you should receive information from the coach or advisor explaining how to download the SportsYou app and join the appropriate group. We strongly encourage parents/guardians to join their child's group as well so that you receive the same important announcements, schedules, reminders, changes, and updates.
Our goal is to make sure families have direct and consistent access to communication from the programs in which their children participate.
If your child is involved in an activity and you have not received information about joining the appropriate SportsYou group, please reach out directly to your child's coach or advisor so they can help get you connected.
Thank you for helping us streamline communication and keep our Panther families informed! ❤️🖤🐾
COMMUNICATION FROM WHS!
DRESS CODE REMINDER
As we prepare to welcome students back, we want to remind everyone of a few WHS dress code expectations. Our goal is to keep expectations simple and ensure students come to school dressed appropriately for a learning environment.
A few of the most common dress code concerns to remember:
- Crop tops are not permitted. Shirts should provide appropriate coverage of the midsection.
- Undergarments should not be visible. This includes tops worn off the shoulder that expose bra straps.
- Shorts must provide appropriate coverage. Shorts should completely cover the buttocks at all times, including when sitting, bending, or moving.
- Pajamas are reserved for Early Release Wednesdays. Students should wear regular school-appropriate clothing on all other school days.
We appreciate families reviewing these expectations with students before the first day of school. Starting the year with everyone understanding the expectations helps us keep the focus where it belongs—on learning, relationships, and having a great school year!
Thank you for your support, Panthers! 🐾
High School School Supplies for the 2026–2027 School Year
As we prepare for another great school year, many families ask whether there is a school supply list for high school students. Unlike elementary and middle school, there is not a general school supply list at the high school level. Each teacher has specific materials that best support learning in their course and will review those expectations with students on the first day of school.
If you would like to purchase supplies before school begins, we strongly recommend that students have the following basic items:
- Pens
- Pencils
- Highlighters
- Spiral notebook(s) for taking notes
- A folder for each class
- A 3-ring binder (or binders) to help keep materials organized
Please note that backpacks, bags, purses, and trappers with shoulder straps are not permitted in classrooms. All backpacks and similar items must remain in students' lockers during the school day. Students should plan to carry only the materials they need for each class.
We appreciate your support as we work together to provide an organized, focused learning environment. We look forward to welcoming everyone back for a successful school year!
