What’s New from Admin
Dear Selma Middle School Families,
As we begin Week 5, thank you for helping us build strong routines that keep students learning and growing.
Attendance Matters
We are very impressed with your commitment to supporting student success—thank you for helping reduce the number of students arriving late each morning. Your partnership makes a real difference in our students’ academic achievement.
Please continue encouraging your child to arrive by 7:45 a.m. so they’re settled and ready when instruction begins. Every minute of learning counts—especially as we prepare for NC Check-In Benchmark assessments at the end of October and early November.
Spotlight on Support: Working WINsday
Does your child need extra help with a concept or time to finish assignments? Working WINsday is here for them!
Each Wednesday, during the school day, students have dedicated time to:
-
Complete missing or late work
-
Get teacher support with challenging classwork
-
Practice and review previously taught skills
This opportunity is available to all students—no sign-up required. Please encourage your child to use this time to stay on top of their learning and build confidence.
Fall Pictures – September 24
Don’t forget: Fall Pictures will be taken on Wednesday, September 24. Please ensure your student comes ready to smile and dressed for school photos.
Together, we can ensure every SeMS student has the tools and time to reach their full potential.

Partnering with Families to Help Students Resolve Conflicts
At Selma Middle, we know that friendships and peer relationships are an important—and sometimes challenging—part of growing up. Conflicts can happen, and unfortunately bullying can occur. When families and schools work together, we can help students feel safe, respected, and ready to learn.
How You Can Help at Home
-
Listen First, Stay Calm. Give your child time to explain what happened. Ask open-ended questions and let them share feelings as well as facts.
-
Focus on Solutions, Not Blame. Encourage your child to think about what they can do next, whether it’s using calm words, walking away, or seeking adult help.
-
Teach Assertive Communication. Practice “I” statements—such as “I felt hurt when…”—to help your child express emotions without escalating the conflict.
-
Stay Connected With Us. If the concern continues or involves bullying, reach out to the teacher, school counselor, or administrator. We will listen and work with you on a plan.
Key Message:
Conflicts and challenges can be opportunities for growth. With calm guidance at home and a strong partnership with school, students learn empathy, problem-solving, and resilience—skills that last a lifetime.
Thank you for working with us to keep Selma Middle a caring and respectful community for every student.
