Dear 6th Grade Families,
I hope you had a wonderful weekend and enjoyed the beautiful, unseasonably warm weather! We have an exciting and busy week ahead for your students, including two field trips and the continuation of MAP testing. Please read through the details below to stay informed about what’s coming up:
1. AVID Field Trip to Oakton Community College (December 10th)
On Tuesday, December 10th, our AVID students will be visiting Oakton Community College in Des Plaines. Here’s the schedule for the day:
- MAP Testing: Students will begin the day by taking the MAP test during their 1st and 2nd periods.
- Field Trip Departure: After testing, students will board the bus to Oakton at 9:30 AM.
- Return to School: They will return to school at 1:15 PM.
- This field trip is only for AVID students, and during the visit, they will tour the college campus and have the opportunity to learn more about the college process from Oakton’s advisors.
2. Evanston Public Library Field Trips (December 12th and 13th)
Our students will also be walking to the Evanston Public Library for a special field trip on either Thursday, December 12th or Friday, December 13th (depending on their class schedule). Here’s the plan:
- Departure: Students will leave the school at 8:30 AM.
- Return: They will be back at school by 10:45 AM, just in time for their scheduled lunch.
- No Lunches Needed: Since the trip will end before lunch, students do not need to bring a lunch on the day of their field trip.
- Dress for the Weather: Please ensure your child is dressed warmly and appropriately for the weather, as we will be walking outside.
3. Cold Weather Reminders
As we enter the winter season, please remember that our students will still be going outside for recess if the temperature “feels like” 20°F or above. With this in mind, it’s essential that students come to school dressed warmly and in weather-appropriate clothing for both indoor and outdoor activities. Here’s a checklist of items your child should have each day:
- A warm coat
- Hat and gloves
- Scarf
- Weather-appropriate footwear to keep their feet warm and dry
Students have 40 minutes of recess and lunch, with 20 minutes spent outside. Proper attire will help ensure your child stays comfortable and healthy during this time.
4. NWEA Testing (MAP Testing) Continues
This week, our students will continue their NWEA MAP testing. Here's what to expect:
- Monday and Tuesday: Students will take their Math MAP assessments.
- Wednesday to Friday: Students who missed any portions of their ELA or Math tests will make them up during these days.
To help your child perform their best:
- Ensure their iPad is fully charged and brought to school each day.
- Encourage a good night’s sleep before the testing days.
- Provide a healthy breakfast: If your child prefers breakfast at school, they can arrive at the cafeteria by 7:40 AM to eat before classes start.
Your support in helping your child prepare for the test is truly appreciated!
