About UmuAgu

What is UmuAgu ?

UmuAgu (Pronounced Oo Moo Ah Goo ) is an Igbo phrase that means CHILDREN OF THE LEOPARD. Agu means leopard. The Majestic African Leopard is our organization mascot / totem. The Leopard is considered the most graceful and elegant of all the African cats. It is also a totem animal among many African ethnic groups, including Igbo and Zulu people. In Zulu , the leopard is called ingwe. The leopard symbolizes all that is noble, courageous and honourable.

The Nsibidi symbol for the leopard is the " X ". Nsibidi is an ancient African writing system. Historically, both Nsibidi and the X were used in the marvel films, Black Panther. A Black Panther, is a melanated leopard. Art imitated real life.

Our Why Our Why

We were established as a restorative support community for those of us in the African Diaspora whose ancestors were taken from Africa and transported around the world via forced labor (enslavement). We established methods in which to reconnect to our ancestral roots, through DNA testing, while we continue in honor and live in our current Diaspora societies.

This is how we choose to heal as well as educate ourselves about our ethnic groups, history, cultures, languages, traditions and rites of passage. We are the bridge between both worlds, lands and societies. We are recalling our rites ad communities in an orderly, uplifting and professional manner.

The quest to find our families around the world is paramount. We use technological advancements to succeed. We are a global family. We are RECLAIMING it ALL.

Application includes completion of our form, payment submission and verification. Once approved, the induction rite of passage process begins. The induction process includes educational classes, group discussions and assignments. Etiquette, protocol and rules of conduct are taught . On the day of induction, the inductee receives an ancestral name, certificate and other membership material. All applicants are expected to govern themselves in accordance with our society rules. Hazing is NEVER permitted.
