Looking Ahead

It's been a remarkable start of the year. We ended the year with 54 students and graduated 15 outstanding seniors. We worked hard to attract new students and were able to secure 22 new 9th graders and a few transfers, too. This morning our enrollment stands at 59. I keep recounting with hopes that we'll reach 60! Perhaps we'll get a call from a new prospective students.

The new students, parents, and teachers (4, pictured below) have added a real sense of newness to the school year. The energy and enthusiasm of the new courses, too, as well as the number of students out for volleyball and tennis (well over half the student body!) add to the energy. We also have a few new initiatives that I'd like to highlight that should pave the way to a brighter future.

First, our new Service & Justice class theology class (juniors & seniors) will begin their community service assignments tomorrow (Thursday). During our long block Thursdays, students will be engaged in community service during the school day. One group will be paired up with students from Special Kids Connect--a local nonprofit serving families of students with disabilities. Our very own Ms. Jess will lead the art classes. Another group will be traveling to Dorothy's Place to prepare and serve lunch. Another group will be traveling to Madonna School to tutor young students in reading. We're excited to challenge our Spirits to serve and educate their hearts as well as their minds.

Second, our Dual Enrollment program is underway with the following approved courses: Biology, Calculus, Culinary Arts, Geology, Precalculus, and Statistics. We're also waiting to see if the instructor for US History is approved. Our students will begin earning college credit while at Notre Dame. We still have offerings in AP Computer Science, AP Drawing, AP Language, AP Literature, AP Physics, AP Psychology, AP US Government, AP US HIstory, and AP World History. We have a rigorous and innovative curriculum for our size.

Third, we're going to begin work on replacing our fire alarm system. It's over 60 years old and badly in need of updating. So there will be technicians on site Monday to begin the month-long process of pulling new wire and replacing the hardware. It's important for us to continue to update and repair when necessary to keep our school safe and efficient.

I hope you've marked your schedule for Back to School night on August 20th. I hope to see you soon.

Go Spirits!
