Erin's Law Lessons Erin's Law Lessons

Starting in April, our Primary School social workers will present a lesson following Erin’s Law for students in your child’s classroom. This lesson will be taught along with other safety lessons during Safety Week. Students will watch a short video and do an activity that introduces them to the concepts of private parts, boundaries, and safety with others.

Erin’s Law was first passed in Illinois in January 2013; since then, 25 other states have adopted it. It is prevention-based, bringing sexual abuse education into public schools using age-appropriate materials and techniques.

Thanks to Erin’s Law, children are taught to recognize personal safety rules and learn what to do if they need assistance. Erin’s Law requires all public schools to provide education on sexual abuse prevention for all students, from early childhood through twelfth grade, every year. The law also requires “age-appropriate curriculum” be presented to our students.

If you feel that this subject matter is inappropriate for your child and would prefer that he/she not participate in this lesson, please contact your child’s teacher by April 5th.

To learn more about Erin’s Law, you can find more information at the following sites:

April is Arab American Heritage Month April is Arab American Heritage Month

zoom_out_map

Arab American Heritage Month celebrates the culture, history, cuisine, and art of Arab Americans. As always we think sharing stories are a great way to give children and families a way to explore and learn more about cultures and traditions.

2021 ARAB AMERICAN CHILDREN'S BOOK AWARD WINNER

Kanzi’s family has moved from Egypt to America, and on her first day in a new school, what she wants more than anything is to fit in. Maybe that’s why she forgets to take the kofta sandwich her mother has made for her lunch, but that backfires when Mama shows up at school with the sandwich. Mama wears a hijab and calls her daughter Habibti (dear one). When she leaves, the teasing starts.

That night, Kanzi wraps herself in the beautiful Arabic quilt her teita (grandma) in Cairo gave her and writes a poem in Arabic about the quilt. Next day her teacher sees the poem and gets the entire class excited about creating a “quilt” (a paper collage) of student names in Arabic. In the end, Kanzi’s most treasured reminder of her old home provides a pathway for acceptance in her new one.

This authentic story with beautiful illustrations includes a glossary of Arabic words and a presentation of Arabic letters with their phonetic English equivalents.

Yoga Week 2024 Yoga Week 2024

International Kids' Yoga Day is set to be celebrated on Friday, April 5th. We can't wait! We are going to be sharing yoga with our students with special staff videos each day that week on our morning announcements. Mr. Kupfer and Mr. Mistrata, our fabulous Physical Education teachers are leading these videos and they teach balance, flexibility, breathing, strength and more. Since 2016, over 480,000 children from 45 countries, 6 continents and all 50 US states have participated in Kids' Yoga Day. Just 5 minutes of yoga a day can boost the mental and physical health and wellness of our children. Click HERE to read about all of the benefits!

Staff will be participating in a special yoga session after school, too!
