Classroom Spotlight: Arts
6th Grade Arts Rotation: On Thursday, November 2, classes 309, 310, & 317 will switch from Music to Art and classes 311, 316, and 318 will switch from Art to Music. They will continue with this class until winter break, after which they will choose whether to continue in Art or Band for the remainder of the year.
Visual Art
In September, students created "All About Me" themed backpacks, sneakers, or hoodies. This month we are celebrating Latino History Month by studying Day of the Dead. Students have been working on 2d sugar skulls using colored pencils to create works of art that honor our loved ones who are no longer with us. The 6th graders who have been taking art as their elective will be switching to music this upcoming Thursday on November 2nd. Please be aware this switch is not permanent for the remainder of the year. Students will choose their elective for the last trimester of the year (after being approved by Mr.Wareham and myself).
Band and Music
The 6th grade has been working hard on learning how to read and perform basic rhythmic notation for the past couple of weeks. We’ll wrap up the rotation this week by learning about the different band instruments that students can learn to play if they choose band class in January. Those instruments are: flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone, or percussion.
The 7th grade bands have been working hard on preparing our first piece, March of the Champions, for our winter concert on December 14th! We started the year by reviewing our first 5 notes, rebuilding our embouchures after a summer off from playing our instruments, and brushing up on playing individual parts at the same time as others in an ensemble. This week, we’re beginning to work on our second piece, The Andromeda Connection.
The 8th grade band has similarly been working on our first piece for the winter concert on the evening of December 14th, The Alcázar. We have also been working on strengthening our embouchures and building our playing endurance by working on our first 6-note scale. Over the past couple of weeks we’ve been breaking down, learning, and practicing each of the different musical phrases from The Alcázar as a full band, in order for each instrument section to build confidence and play all of the different parts together as an ensemble. This week we are beginning to work on our second piece for the winter concert, Bridgeway March.
Physical Education
In PE this week we continue to work through our Cooperative Games Unit. The activity of the week is Captain Ball! The emphasis for this unit is on collaboration and communication. The students who demonstrate these values have great success! Each week we have been spotlighting one of the MS 50 PRIDE Values. This week we focus on determination and how it applies to a game of Captain Ball. Looking forward to another week of hard work and fun up in the Gym!

Teachers will check the previous week’s work every Monday. Students can use their @nycstudents account to log into i-Ready by visiting clever.com.
If logging in on an iPad, you must first download and login to the Clever app. You can then launch i-Ready from Clever and students will be logged in. Download this information sheet for more detailed instructions.
