Bell Schedule this week: AABCD
Elf Exchange
Our Earth Club is hosting an Elf Exchange for all MMS students after school on December 18th. This is a holiday gift shop where students can select and wrap donated new, or gently used, items to gift to their family members. Our Cubs love their families, but we know that there isn't always a lot of money for them to spend on gifts. Our amazing MMS staff find and donate items so that our kids have something to give to others.
You are welcome to join us in donating items to the Elf Exchange. Please drop by any new or gently used items to our office - no clothes, please. :)
These items are free for students and intended to be gifts for them to give to family members. It is also a way to promote sustainable giving.
Spirit Week
Our Cubs will have some fun with a Spirit Week the week before winter break. Our Leadership Class students have picked the themes for the days:
Monday 12/15 - PJ Day
Tuesday 12/16 - Twin Day
Wednesday 12/17 - Ugly Holiday Sweater Day
Thursday 12/18 - Color Wars! 6th = Green, 7th = White, 8th = Red
Friday 12/19 - Holiday Cheer - wear favorite holiday themed clothing
World Cultures Class
Our World Cultures classes are working to organize two important events as service projects for two different non-profit organizations. Stay tuned for more information on Haiti Night and a school Dance coming up in January!
Egg Drop
Our 8th grade science classes have been designing landing platforms that would protect an egg from cracking when dropped from a height. Students were given an egg - and most named their eggs and some even decorated them - and then dropped those eggs onto crash landing "pads" they created our of just 10 sheets of paper and 1 meter of tape. It has been fun seeing them dropping their eggs all over the school!
The luckiest egg was named "Phillus," and it survived a 5 meter drop into a spectacular crash pad. Great job Cubs!
Clubs
It is important to us that all of our Cubs feel involved here at school. In an effort to help with that we encourage students to start and attend Clubs. These clubs must be approved by me, and students must find a staff member willing to donate their time to supervise the club. Most of our clubs meet during lunchtime, but some meet after school. There is a lot of fluctuation - if kids get bored, the club dissolves, if teachers get busy with their regular duties they might cancel a club meeting or the club altogether. There might also be other events the interfere with clubs. I make an announcement over the intercom every morning with information regarding clubs. Students should be paying attention so they can decide which clubs they would like to attend. We know that parents are looking for ways for their kids to be involved with after school activities, and that sports are not for everyone. We are working to provide funding for additional staffing and transportation in order to provide more after school clubs and activities for kids.
Clubs that are happening now at MMS include:
Origami Club - meets on Mondays during lunch
D&D Club - meets on Mondays after school
Knowledge Bowl - meets on Tuesdays during lunch, and also competes with other schools and/or staff
Math Olympiad - meets on Wednesdays during lunch
BeyBlades and Super Smash Bro's Club - meets Wednesdays during lunch
American Sign Language Club - meets on Wednesdays after school
Knitting Club - meets after school on Wednesdays
Earth Club - meets Thursdays after school
Lego Club - meets Thursdays during lunch
Math Club - meets Thursdays during lunch
Book Club - meets a few days a week after school depending on library availability
New Clubs are formed all the time! We are currently working on starting up a homework club which would meet after school and hope to have that started in time for second semester.
7th Grade Field Trip
It's a Dickens of a Christmas Mystery!
We are thrilled to announce that our seventh-grade students have been invited to attend a live performance of A Sherlock Carol on Tuesday, December 16th. The performance will be the culminating event for our unit on Victorian England and A Christmas Carol. After lunch, students will board buses to the Kenworthy Theater, where they'll enjoy the magic of live theater. In A Sherlock Christmas, a grown-up Tiny Tim enlists Sherlock Holmes to investigate the mysterious death of Ebenezer Scrooge. The Great Detective will use his incredible skills to unravel a Dickens of a Christmas mystery!
We are excited for our students to have this wonderful opportunity to experience the thrill of live theater. The permission slip is attached to this newsletter. A Sherlock Christmas Permission Slip
Sports update
This year we formed the first ever MMS Girl's Wrestling team. These 37 girls - most of which had never wrestled before - worked hard and learned a lot over the course of the season. In fact, they won their championship tournament in Priest River last week, bringing home 1st place! Way to go Cubs! Our Boys Basketball teams have all had a great season as well.
Next up - Girl's Basketball and Boy's wrestling as well as Competition Cheer.
