Hallowell's Hawk in the Tree

Hawk Updates:

Have you ever been outside and heard "caw!", and you look up to see a hawk? Where have you been? You most likely were at Hallowell! Hallowell has two red tailed hawks. They have been mating and living in the trees that used to be out front but got chopped down. Now they have resourcefully gone out in search for a new tree. They have found one that is a bit far from here at the old airbase. They have a nest, but no eggs yet, although in previous years there have been. Although it is a tad bit far, you can still see them hover around or hunt on school property. They like squirrels, mice, and baby birds, they have to eat right?

Fun Facts about Hawks:

  • They have really good eyesight. Ever wonder why they circle up in the air like that? Well it's because they have such good eyesight, and they circle and look for movement which is most likely there prey.

  • Did you know that hawks always come back to there nesting areas? Most likely they take over that place. At Hallowell, the hawks that are there were little babies last year.

Discover Your Future STEM

On Saturday April 9, 2016 multiple girls from Hallowell participated in a discover your future STEM event for girls only! If you're not familiar with STEM it is an acronym for science, technology, engineering, and math.

The first thing all the girls did was get their name tags. On the tag was the girl's name and a group name. The group name was a famous woman like Elizabeth Blackwell, Marie Curie, and many, many, more. I bet you have heard of two or three of these eighteen women. This event was trying to make girls more into STEM jobs.

Next, everyone found their groups and sat with them in the auditorium. Dr. Mellisa Andrews Pearson talked to us about diabetes. She also explained that to be a nurse, you don’t have to deal with the gross stuff. There are many different nursing jobs she also stated.

The first station my group visited was a pond organism’s investigation. We had pond water under a microscope. We then had to try to find the amber, protozoa, and euglena organisms. We discovered that some of these can move! We then had a quick lunch break. This helped fuel us for the rest of the stations.

Next, I went to Newton's Nook in between lunch and our next session. Newton's Nook explained Newton's laws of physics. It also had fun math games.

Then we went to a station titled chemistry of the crime science. We made tdye fall off the M+M's. We than took the dye and ran it through the DNA tester. Once the dye ran through, we saw that the DNA found on the crime scene matched another DNA. The one that matched was the criminal we than made are own inviable ink.

After that, we made chocolate mousse. While we made that we learned about the science of the different cooking apparatus. We also learned about different foods all around the world.

We got to revisit Newton's Nook for a little bit. After that we went to the discovery lab. We made catapults and kazoos. We learned about podcasting and how blubber keeps astronomic worm.

Finally, we went to a dental hygienist's office. We got to learn how to polish teeth. Also, we learned how to put sealant on. Finally, we got to work with a simulator baby. The nursing student taught us how to give the baby head to toe assessment and swaddle the baby.

Throughout the whole day, everyone learned a lot!

Hallowell 500

The Hallowell 500 was a great experience! Everyone that was there had a fantastic time! The night that this event occurred was March 15.

The 500 started at 6:30 p.m. with the preschool and kindergarten cars. For their first time doing the 500, they were really good! The champion for this grade would go on to get 3rd place out of everyone, then came first grade. This is when things began to get interesting. Their cars were a bit faster than the kindergarten cars, because they were a little more experienced (but not being experienced can lead to creativity). Next, it was second grade. They were just as interesting a first grade, but in my opinion, some first graders made faster cars than some of the second graders!

Next came the upper wing grades, starting with third. My younger brother is in that grade, so I paid some extra attention to it. Their cars were definitely faster than the second grade cars but a lot less creative. (Most of the cars from now on will be very streamlined and not very decorative.) Then came fourth grade, which in my opinion, was the best in fast decorated cars. By fourth grade, many students at that grade level mastered fast and decorative cars. Then came my grade, fifth. Someone from this grade would win it all!

The championship race was epic! The final results for the whole school were:

1- Dylan B.- Grade 5

2- Mike B.- Kindergarten

3- Brady B.- Grade 3

Mr. Schlenker - A Special Person

Laughter is the sound you hear when you walk into Mr. Schlenker's classroom. Mr. Schlenker is a splendid teacher who makes learning amusing, exciting, and enjoyable for all.

The first time I met Mr. Schlenker was when I was in second grade. He gave out popsicle sticks, but people got splinters, so he gave out coins as a reward instead. Also, as a behavior system he took away fries made of yellow sponges if students misbehaved. As well as that, Mr. Schlenker allowed the class to wrap him in toilet paper as a mummy for Halloween, and he looked ridiculously funny! I have never seen a teacher act that strangely before.

Things have not changed at all since second grade. If anything, his behaviors have become even stranger! A few months ago, in fifth grade, Mr. Schlenker began yelling at the toilet in the middle of reading class! The students could not hold back their laughter. He sounded absolutely insane.

Earlier in the year, Mr. Schlenker dressed up as Mr. Incredible for Halloween, pretending to be a superhero. He wore shorts over sweat pants, and he looked absolutely absurd. No one could take him seriously!

Although Mr. Schlenker is a goofball, he is an excellent teacher. Thanks to Mr. Schlenker, I made Honor Roll and felt like a king. Mr. Schlenker is also supportive. He came to an Epilepsy Walk to support me even though he had two young kids with him. He was the one teacher to attend this special event. On top of that, he bought four shirts. Two for his kids, one for his wife, and one for himself. He even ran for a while until his kids became tired and cranky. It made my day having him there to support me for such an important event.

As you can see, Mr. Schlenker is a humorous, yet supporting teacher who I will always remember.

Jeopardy Spin

We have interviewed teachers throughout the school asking them if they like either Jeopardy or Wheel Of Fortune. Most teachers have voted Jeopardy, a tiny percentage voted Wheel Of Fortune, and the teachers and us recommend watching Jeopardy and Wheel Of Fortune.

Mr. Baer voted for Jeopardy, and he said, " I vote Jeopardy because it's more challenges and it makes you think more." Mr. Henry voted for Wheel Of Fortune, and he said, "I like to watch game shows to see who wins." Mrs. Johnson voted for Jeopardy, and she said,

"I like to compete against my husband." But, Mrs. Slott voted Wheel of Fortune, and she said, " I like it because the puzzles are fun!"

A lot of the other teachers said, "No, I don’t watch those shows." But, Mr. Baer, Mr. Henry, Mrs. Johnson, and Mrs. Slott gave you lots of reasons why you should use your free time and watch these shows. We recommend it!

Introduction: By Joseph A.

Ideas: By you, the students

Interview with Mr. Baer

Q: When did you start playing and when did you start teaching?

A: I started playing ultimate in high school 11 years ago and teaching 6 years ago.

Q: What is it like being a teacher and Spinners player?

A: It's pretty cool because you can use skills from both teaching and Ultimate to help each other so I can learn from both.

Q: What made you start playing and teaching?

A: I started plating ultimate when I go hurt doing track. My friends, Tom and Shawn, made me play ultimate and I never went back to track. I have 3 younger siblings, so I have been teaching since I was 3 according to my Mom. I tried to teach my two week old baby brother how to throw a baseball.

Q: How do you manage your schedule?

A: I rely on co-workers to help for some things, and instead of watching TV, I work out and I manage to do stuff before school/work.

Q: What does it feel like to have your students cheering you on the stands as you are playing?

A: It makes all the hard work worth it to see the people I care abut in the stands.

Q: What was your favorite memory as a Spinners player?

A: 1: My first Spinners game, I had 3,000 people in the stands, I couldn't even hear the person I was guarding. It was so cool to see so many people I love and care about come to see my first game. 2: Picking up the trophy in 2012 with my brother.

Q: What was your favorite memory as a teacher?

A: Last year, seeing 5th graders who I worked with for two years graduate 5th grade. I am proud of all the hard work they accomplished.

Q: If you were to chose between being a teacher or Spinners player which one would you pick?

A: I love both because it lets me share ultimate with students, but I would pick ultimate because it still allows me to work with kids at camps and clinics.

Q: Who was your biggest influence in being a teacher and a player?

A: 6th grade teacher Mr. Smerkemich because he was very hands on and fun. He made me realize school can be fun. Ultimate coach Finch. He taught me how to play the right way. He was hard, but very respectful.

Q: Who is the better player, you or your brother?

A: I am. Mike has always been faster and explosive at sports, but I control the game more. I played against my brother 3 times and won three times!

Robotics

Have you ever heard of robotics? Well it's a super, awesome program held at our school! It is for 4th and 5th grades. You start off with a whole bunch of Legos. You either have a booklet or computer that have directions to build your robot. Once your robot is finished, you get placed in three different groups, and then you get assigned a challenge within your group. Then, you program your robot to complete your challenge. There are different challenges like pushing a truck, knocking down a tower, and sorting blocks. The program is held on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday all through the month of March. This is what Alex F. thought of the program:

Q: How did you like robotics?

A: Good

Q: Was it hard?

A: Yes

Q: Did you have fun?

A: Yes

Q: Did you like building the Legos?

A: Yes

Q: What did you name your robot?

A: We didn’t name it.

Q: What was your favorite part?

A: Getting to see what challenges we were going to do

Q: Would you consider doing it again?

A: Yes, in the middle school

Thank you for reading our article on robotics! We hope you consider doing it in 4th or 5th grade!

What We Learned About Mr. Glemser

Mr. Glemser has been a teacher at Hallowell for sixteen years. He has been a gym and a health teacher for six years now. Outside of school, he coaches at Gwynedd University as an assistant for the girls basketball team. Mr.Glemser likes scuba diving, and he likes any outdoor activity. He wears shorts even if it's cold, because it’s a tradition in his family. The one word that we would describe about Mr.Glemser is that he is spontaneous.

Mr. Glemser likes a lot about Hallowell, but he loves how Hallowell is a small school. He has many mixed emotions about going to the new school. One of his favorite things to do is work in the garden with all the kids. Mr.Glemser is a member of the "M.E.G. Team". The M stands for Miletto, the E stands for Eldridge, and the G stands for Glemser. They lead activities for Hallowell students like Morning Workout, the Seeds of Growth Garden, Fall for Reading, and 5ks.

We think Mr. Glemser is the one teacher who is super funny and never boring to be around! Finally, we think that Mr. Glemser is a great teacher and we will surely miss him next year!!

Earth Day Assembly

Learning from an Expert

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

On April 22 we celebrate Earth Day every year. Earth Day is the day when we show respect for the world around us, and we inform others about how to protect the soil of the plants we eat, the air we breathe, and the water we bathe in and drink. Earth Day is a lot of fun at Hallowell, especially for the fifth grade students. We all had fun helping the school and the earth!

Some of the ways you can help the Earth on Earth Day and every day are by: saving paper, recycling cans, plastic and paper; and not littering. Picking up litter, saving water by taking shorter showers, turning off the water, and by turning off the lights when you leave a room are more ways. When you do those things you save, trees, animals, water, and electricity.

On Earth Day at Hallowell the 5 grade students get to help the school and the earth by mulching around the front and back of school, weeding around and in the flower beds, pulling dead flowers and plants, and planting flowers around the front of the school (which was my favorite activity).

Kindergarten through fourth grade students did a lot of fun things too! They played fun games and did fun activities! They decorated paper bags for the local supermarket, made bird feeders out of pipe-cleaners and cheerios, played a relay race by using recycled items and sorted them into categories while exercising. They also had an assembly about the word "respect". They played a game with respect questions, too!

We all had a lot of fun on Earth Day. We all love helping the earth. I can’t wait until April next year!

Happy To Show Mom And Dad My Binder

The Celebration of Leading and Learning

Last Friday, June 10th, we had the Celebration of Leading and Learning, when parents come and see the work we did over the years.

My parents were very proud of my work. I was too, I worked hard all year on those. It is their favorite day of the year because they get to see all the work I did. I think your parents will agree. The celebration is a way to show the parents what we did this year.

The celebration brought back memories of early on in the school year. It also brought back memories of doing the celebration a few years ago when it used to be called Portfolio Day. I remember those days.

It is also a way to see how you improved from earlier on in the year. My grades were lower in the beginning of the year, but went up. This happened because of the Great Curriculum Change of 2015-2016. I think you will see patterns like that in your portfolio too.

Hence, the Celebration of Leading and Learning was a way for our parents to see what we did this year, to bring back memories, and to see patterns in your grades.
