UC Updates
First-year admission updates and resources
Admission decision season is here!
For more information on the enrollment process for first-years, including campus-specific information, reference the following two resources found in our counselor resource library:
Accepting a UC offer of admission
Students can accept an admission offer by agreeing to the provisions/conditions outlined in the offer and submitting their Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) with a deposit of $250 to reserve their space at a campus. Some important things to keep in mind about accepting a UC admission offer:
- Students can accept only one admission offer from one UC campus.
- The SIR deposit is applied to the student's first enrollment term tuition.
- Students who qualified for the UC application fee waiver may also qualify to defer their SIR deposit until financial aid is disbursed.
- The SIR deposit is nonrefundable and nontransferable.
- Further documentation regarding residency status for tuition determination purposes will be required if students received an undetermined residency status at the time of admission.
The deadline to submit a SIR is May 1 for first-year applicants and June 1 for transfer applicants.
Spring campus events for admitted students
Newly admitted students have a range of options to engage with the campuses this spring and to learn more about the campus experience. Admitted students are encouraged to attend in-person and/or virtual events to make an informed decision before submitting their SIR.
View the campus visits and events page on the counselor website for updated information about campus events this spring and other visit options. Further information can be found on the respective campus websites.
Campus spotlight: New AI major at UC Santa Barbara
In response to student and industry demand, UC Santa Barbara is launching an undergraduate major in Artificial Intelligence. Courses in the new major, based in the Computer Science (CS) Department, will be offered starting in the 2026–27 academic year.
Computer Science professor Tevfik Bultan noted, “Artificial intelligence is the most recent computing revolution that is causing drastic changes to human civilization. The new degree will enable us to provide in-depth education to our students in these rapidly progressing areas. I am particularly excited to see the interdisciplinary education and research opportunities that the new degree will create across the College of Engineering and UC Santa Barbara, since artificial intelligence can be applied in any area of study.”
Coursework for the new degree, expected to begin in the fall quarter for 2026, will reflect the need for specific training and be broken down into three main areas: AI foundations, including computing and AI principles, statistics and optimization; domain-specific coursework, including machine learning (ML), natural language processing, computer vision and deep learning; and field electives in AI and related areas offered in engineering and the humanities.
