Attendance Makes All the Difference!
At Tomahawk, we are committed to finishing the school year on a strong note, and regular attendance at school makes all the difference. Your child's regular attendance at school is invaluable, not just for their academic growth but for their social and emotional development too. Your child is a vital part of our school community, and every day they're absent, we miss the opportunity to partner with them on their educational journey and watch them learn and grow. Together we can work to ensure they can make the most of every school day, building a foundation for a bright and successful future.

If you're facing obstacles to regular attendance, please reach out. We're more than ready to collaborate on making school a priority and a possibility for your child.

Students of the Month Students of the Month

Each month there will be a classroom recipient (K-5) chosen by the classroom teacher as someone who displays the expected behaviors of Tomahawk Students showing: We Matter, We are Safe, and We are Prepared. This student helps ensure others know that they: Belong, Matter, and are Loved.

The staff members who work with students outside of the classroom (Art, PE. Music, Library, Counselors, Lunch room staff) will vote on the representative for each classroom. That student will receive a yard sign for the month. We are so Proud of all of our Tomahawk students, and showcase their strengths in many ways through out each grade level and each class. We are excited to celebrate these school wide recipients each month, to continue to show our Tomahawk Expectations!

New Olathe Ordinances Focus on Bike, E-Bike and Scooter Safety

With warmer weather bringing more students outdoors, we wanted to share the newly-updated rules for bikes, e-bikes and scooters from the City of Olathe. Here are the key points for our students:

  • All riders under 18 years old must wear a helmet when riding on an electric scooter or e-bike.
  • Electric scooters cannot be ridden on the road unless the speed limit is 30 MPH or under and there’s no sidewalk.
  • E-bikes may be ridden on roads with speed limits up to 40 MPH.
  • Riders of bicycles or any motorized device must yield to pedestrians and warn them before passing (ring the bell, say “excuse me” or “on your left”, etc.)
  • There is a 15 MPH limit for electric scooters and e-bikes on the sidewalk.
  • It is illegal to ride a bicycle, e-bike, or electric scooter in a careless, reckless, or negligent manner or weaving in and out of traffic. Stay as close to the right side of the road as possible except when turning left.
  • An electric scooter or e-bike must have proper lighting and be visible in order to ride at dusk or at night.

  • Electric powered “bikes” that cannot be pedaled are actually motorcycles or motor-driven cycles and require a license to ride.
  • If you get into an accident while riding on a bicycle, electric scooter, or e-bike where someone is injured or property is damaged, you must provide contact information to other parties involved and report the accident to the police.

  • Parents may not authorize or knowingly permit their children to violate any Olathe bicycle, e-bike, or electric scooter regulations.

For those in need of a helmet, the Olathe Fire Department is partnering with the University of Kansas Health System for its annual Helmet Head Bike Rodeo on Sunday, May 3, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the University of Kansas Cancer Center in Olathe. Kids aged 15 and under will receive a free bike helmet while supplies last.

We encourage families to have a conversation at home that will help keep everyone safe. Please read the complete list of updated rules by visiting OlatheKS.gov/RollSafe.

Next Year Class Placement

During the fourth quarter, our school team is planning for the 2026-2027 school year. This planning includes class placements for next year. Although placements will not be finalized until August, tentative class lists will be created in May. The class placement decision team consists of the principal, counselor, the grade level teachers, specials teachers (art, music, physical education, and library), and, if applicable, special education teachers. Students are placed in a class with consideration of the following:

  • An even mix of social/behavioral skills
  • An equivalent number of students in each class at a grade level
  • Social dynamics between students
  • An even mix of boys and girls
  • An even mix of academic ability levels
  • Teacher style

As you can see, a large number of variables are taken into consideration. It is an important task, and one that we take seriously. We want you to know that we will do our very best to provide the kind of learning environment that will help your child have a successful school year. While I welcome your input regarding your child’s personality and learning style, I ask that you please do not request individual teachers by name. Thank you for your cooperation.

Moving and Not Returning to Tomahawk for 2026-2027?

If your student is NOT returning to Tomahawk next year, please contact the office 780-7690 and speak with Kelli Zuel or Julie France.

Reminder: Photo ID REQUIRED EACH TIME You Want to Enter Tomahawk

Please remember that District policy requires us to ask for ID from EVERYONE each time they enter the building. Please remember to have your driver's license or other form of picture ID ready for the camera at the door when you arrive at Tomahawk. If you come to the door without your ID, we will kindly ask you to return to your car to get it.

Counselor's Corner

Mrs. Gorczyca will be on maternity leave during the month of May and is very sad to miss the final weeks of the school year. In her absence, we are fortunate to welcome Mr. Oborny, former Regency Place principal, who will be stepping in. We know students will enjoy getting to know him! Please join us in giving him a warm welcome.

My name is Greg Oborny, a recently retired USD 233 educator with 39 years of experience, including 25 years as principal at Regency Place Elementary. While I have enjoyed retirement, I quickly realized how much I value being part of an elementary school community. I am excited for the opportunity to support the students, staff, and families at Tomahawk Elementary.

Throughout my career, I have served as a first-grade teacher, instructional resource teacher in language arts, and elementary principal at both Northview and Regency Place. While I am not a school counselor by training, I bring extensive experience supporting students’ social-emotional needs, behavior systems, and overall well-being. I look forward to working closely with staff and supporting students during this time.

I look forward to getting to know your children and supporting the Tomahawk community.

Growth and Development

  • The 5th grade classes will be taught on May 1st at the end of the day.

The 5th grade video is available to watch online.

  • Boys: https://youtu.be/2XF0awGRTWs
  • Girls: https://youtu.be/gv21b3ZpSLg

The videos are shown separately to the girls and boys. If you have any questions, please call me at 913-780-7696.

Dental Screenings

All students (unless the opt out) will be part of the Dental Screening scheduled for May 13th and 14th. Look out for paperwork that will be sent home with your student to return to school if you want to OPT OUT of the screening or if you want to allow your student to receive fluoride. If you do not return the form, your child will only be screened. Screening consists of looking inside the mouth with a flashlight for approx. 30 seconds. Contact the nurse with any questions.

Medications

All remaining medications and emergency medications will be sent home with the students on the last day of school. Parents should notify the school nurse if they prefer other arrangements to be made. Please remember if your child will be taking medication during the next school year, you will need a new doctor’s note for it. We need a new note / order every year. Our fax number is 913-780-7699. Thank you!

Immunizations and Physicals

If your students get immunization boosters or an updated physical/well-child visit this summer, please provide a copy for Nurse Devin by emailing directly to dmandozzi@olatheschools.org or faxing it to us at 913-780-7699. A physical copy can also be provided at the beginning of the school year.

Field Day / Outdoor Festivities

We love this time of year and the warm weather! It is important to us that we keep your student safe in the hot temperatures. Please send water bottles with your student every day, but especially on Field Day- May 8th.

As for sunscreen, we treat sunscreen like an “Over the Counter” product, per district guidelines. We cannot apply sunscreen unless we have an order from a healthcare provider, and the sunscreen is provided by the parent. Please apply sunscreen to your student in the morning before school, and wear proper clothing if the weather is hot (hat, sunglasses, sneakers etc.). You can send sunscreen with students (marked with their name) for reapplication by the student during the school day.
