Veterans attending the Community Veterans Day Observance Nov. 7 at Red Wing High School had letters from Twin Bluff Middle School seventh graders placed on the chairs. Several veterans sent letters in return. One of those is featured here.

They thanked us for thanking them They thanked us for thanking them

By Kim Mann

Grade 7 Social Studies Teacher

For many years, seventh grade students at Twin Bluff Middle School have created Veterans Day cards to honor those who have served our country. In the early years, before the community program at Red Wing High School began, the cards were sent to the Veterans Hospital in Minneapolis. Today, every card is given directly to veterans in the local community, making the experience even more personal and meaningful.

I am always brought to tears by the heartfelt messages the students create for our local veterans.

Before the project begins, students watch videos of veterans receiving cards or meeting the students who made them. Throughout the process, I share stories from past years, including letters sent back by veterans as well as personal experiences from growing up watching my dad shake hands with fellow veterans and say, “Welcome home, Brother.”

Many students are often shocked to learn that Vietnam War veterans did not receive a proper welcome home. These stories leave a lasting impact and make the act of creating the cards even more meaningful.

This project is incredibly meaningful to me as a teacher. I hope the students remember the experience and carry that respect and gratitude forward.

Through these cards, Twin Bluff students are learning to honor veterans while making a lasting impact on their community.

Tower View Candle Company is a start-to-finish operation. Current manufacturing focuses on holiday products, but candles are available throughout the year.

Experiencing how business works Experiencing how business works

The Tower View Alternative High School Work Experience Department’s small business class runs a soy-based candle business. Students create a business plan, market their products, sell them and then donate the proceeds. This year's profits will go to the CARE Clinic, which provides medical, dental, and mental health services to low-income, uninsured, or underinsured residents in Goodhue and Wabasha counties.

There are more than a dozen fragrances, and each half-pint candle is $7. Learn more here.

What a supernova experience

Third graders visited the Rochester Mayo High School Planetarium this week. This trip is made possible through a grant from the Red Wing Public Schools Foundation. The RWPSF was established in 1995 to enhance the experience of Red Wing students and continues to do so because of generous donor support. To donate, please go to RedWingSchools.org/how-to-donate.

Please ensure children arrive on time Please ensure children arrive on time

A consistent morning routine sets the tone for a day of learning and activity. When students arrive at school late, they miss important educational instruction in literacy and math.

Elementary students who arrive up to 60 minutes late for a school day are marked tardy. After 60 minutes, however, students will be marked as absent for the morning because of how much core instruction they have missed.

At Burnside Elementary, a half-day absence will be marked for any student arriving at 8:30 a.m. or after, and at Sunnyside Elementary a half-day absence will be marked for any student arriving at 8:45 a.m. and after.
