Irving Elementary Weekly Update
Week of February 2nd
Principal Message
Irving Families -
We are excited to once again take part in our One School One Book shared reading experience—an opportunity to bring our entire school community together around the same book. This program will kick off with a school-wide assembly on Monday, when students will learn the name of the book. Students will begin reading that same night at home.
Each child will receive their own copy of the book along with a bookmark featuring a QR code that links to the program website and nightly reading schedule. Families are encouraged to read together for about 15 minutes each night. To build excitement, daily trivia questions will be posted on the website, and two students from each class will be selected each day to earn a prize as we celebrate reading together across all grade levels. We hope you enjoy sharing this experience with your child.
February is Black History Month, and we are proud to celebrate our Irving community. Each week, we will spotlight two or more African American families near the front TV and highlight influential figures (calendar of figures below) during morning announcements.
In addition, we will be hosting a Black History Month Spirit Week during the week of February 16th. More information about daily themes will be shared soon.
We are also excited to welcome BrondiHouse for a school-wide assembly on the morning of Friday, February 20th. The assembly, “The Oral Traditions of Black History,” will explore the rich oral history of Black people through music, dance, and nonverbal communication.
The PTO February fundraiser is underway — carnations ($1) and pens ($3) are available to order. Forms are due February 11, with delivery on February 13. We also invite families to join us for our PTO meeting this Thursday at 6:00 PM in the Teacher’s Lounge.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership. We look forward to a meaningful and engaging month ahead.

PBIS Corner - February Focus: First Time Listeners
This month we’re launching a new section of our newsletter — our PBIS Corner — where we’ll share the positive behavior themes we are teaching and reinforcing across the school, along with ways families can support the same skills at home.
At Irving, we use PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) to clearly teach expectations, recognize positive behavior, and create a consistent, supportive school environment. Just like academics, we believe behavior expectations should be taught, practiced, and encouraged.
February PBIS Booster: First Time Listeners
Starting this month, our PBIS booster focuses on being a First Time Listener.
First Time Listener means:
Students listen and follow directions the first time they are given — without repeated reminders or disruptions.
How the Booster Works at School
-
Staff will give out pink Eagle Eyes to students they observe being First Time Listeners anywhere in the building.
-
Pink Eagle Eyes are worth 2 PBIS points when students shop at the PBIS cart.
-
Pink Eagle Eyes will only be awarded during February, but their 2-point value will continue through Spring Break so students have time to save and use them.
How Families Can Reinforce This at Home
You can support this month’s focus with a few simple conversations and practices:
-
Talk about what it means to be a “first time listener”
-
Give a direction once and praise your child when they follow it right away
-
Use specific praise like: “I like how you listened the first time I asked.”
-
Ask your child where they practiced being a first time listener at school
Working together helps students see that these skills matter everywhere — at school and at home.
More PBIS themes and boosters will be shared here each month.
