Mustang Musings
April 2026

April marks the arrival of spring and the sense of renewal that comes with it. While the grass and flowers may not yet be in full bloom, the growth has begun—making April a time to nurture what’s ahead. The same is true in our classrooms, where student learning continues to grow and develop each day. It’s also a time for students to demonstrate their progress during testing season, showcasing all they’ve learned. Throughout the building, classrooms remain full of energy as students engage in meaningful lessons and continue building their skills.
Past newsletters are posted on our district website.

WG Business Partner Celebration
Earlier this month, West Grand High School's College and Career Department recognized our local business partners who have hosted high school students as interns. It was a night filled with great food, meaningful connections, and the opportunity to hear from both businesses and interns about the impact of this outstanding program.
This marked the second annual event hosted by West Grand to thank our local businesses for partnering with us in education and supporting our students’ future success.
6th Grade Mock Career Fair
Under the guidance of Mrs. Vance, our 6th grade students hosted a mock “Career Fair,” sharing their learning with elementary students, West Grand staff, and families and community members. Students explored different career clusters, took personality assessments, researched careers of interest, and created presentation boards to showcase their findings.
Postsecondary Exporation off to a great start for these young go getters!
The Play that Goes Wrong
State Science Fair
West Grand Jr./Sr. High proudly had four students represent our school at the Colorado State Science and Engineering Fair at the beginning of the month. These students first showcased their projects at the West Grand Science Fair and advanced through the Regional Science Fair, earning their place at the state level. This achievement reflects their hard work, curiosity, and dedication to scientific learning. The students who competed were: Bailey Cook, Samantha Simmons, Emerald Ballards, and Eliza Byrne. Great job, ladies!
State FFA CDEs
Health & Safety Fair
The annual WGSD Health & Safety Fair for students was a hit! Students in grades PK-12th grade got to experience different stations learning various aspects of healthy lifestyle, nutrition, and safety. The kids spent time with all sorts of members of the Kremmling Community (Kremmling Fire, Middle Park Health, Mountain Parks Electric, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, Colorado River Headwaters Alliance, Pregnancy Resource Center, etc) learning a variety of things such as fire safety, hazards of driving impaired, how to safely pack to spend a day outside, how to deal with mountain lion encounters, simple first aid, hazards of drinks / energy drinks, how to manage stress levels, dealing with snake bites, eating healthy, and others.
Thank you to our community members for coming in to be partners with us in health education. And a big thank you to Ms. Harmon for organizing this wonderful event!
Right on Target
Earlier this month, students in grades 4–6 wrapped up an exciting archery unit in physical education, where they learned how to safely use a bow, aim with focus, and hit their targets. This unique learning experience was made possible through a grant that provided staff training and equipment, giving our students the chance to build new skills and confidence.
A big thank you to WG PE teacher Ms. Larrabee, CPW Officer Behncke, and the many parent volunteers who helped make this unit safe, informative, and fun for our students!
Dissections
The 6th grade students got a hands-on learning experience of scientific anatomy through fetal pig dissections. Nurse Gaines' high school class had the pigs ready to go and the 6th grade was able to observe what was done and see for themselves the different organs and parts of the fetal pig. They were sure impressed... perhaps not with the smell! ;)
PCT Learning across the country
The West Grand Patient Care Technician (PCT) class had an incredible opportunity to travel to California to have hands-on learning experiences in the field of nursing. They got to tour the BODIES museum exhibit, Stanford hospital, Stanford Goodman Surgical Center, Stanford anatomy lab, and Stanford Flight for Life. This experience demonstrated different aspects and opportunities in the healthcare field as these students consider if that is the pathway for them.
Thank you to Nurse Gaines for fundraising and organizing this learning opportunity!
Celebrating Earth Day
First Grade
Students in first grade celebrated Earth Day by being out in and learning about nature. Math and Reading work happened outside in the sun. Students also read Ranger Rick Jr. Magazines in the library.
WGECC
Our youngest students also showed their care for our earth by cleaning up trash outside of the WGECC
