Highlight Tool
Google Add-Ons
Why Google Add-Ons?
It is a great way to collect and organize highlighted text in a separate document.
Create customized highlighters, collect and organize highlighted text in a separate document, and share specific highlighter sets with your class.
This simple tool could be used to highlight nouns, verbs, and adjectives in text; main idea and details; fact and opinion; or coding text for upper grades. The possibilities are endless!
Challenge
Open a Google Doc. Click on add-ons (on the top bar of the doc).
Click on Get Add-ons.
Search for Highlight Tool by Jason Chin and Add the App by pressing the blue free button.
Once you have added the highlight tool, open a Google Doc. Then click on add-ons and click highlight tool and start.
The attached slideshow is helpful in how to use the highlight tool (use slides 6-9)
- You will want to add some text to your google doc to try out the highlight tool. Click on create highlighter and name it. Choose how many colors and what you want to have students highlight (fact/opinion, noun, verb, adjective, etc.) Once you have added all the different highlighters click save.
Try highlighting the different categories in your document. When you are finished highlighting you can export the highlighted information into a new doc. Choose by sequence or by color and then choose to have the information imported into a new doc. You will then need to click on the link to doc to see your new categorized form.
Optional- To share your highlighter with your class you will need to create a highlighter key template- in your google doc, click on add-ons, highlight tool then share highlighters. You will need to link to the document to get to the highlighter key template. Share this document with your students through google classrooms to allow them to use the same highlighter template you created.
