PRINCIPAL CORNER
Dear OSES Families,
As we approach Teacher Appreciation Week, it's a wonderful time to reflect on the incredible impact that teachers have on our lives. A good teacher does more than just impart knowledge; they inspire, motivate, and nurture their students to reach their full potential.
Good teachers ignite a passion for learning. They make subjects come alive and inspire students to explore new ideas and concepts. Through their dedication and enthusiasm, they create an engaging and stimulating learning environment that encourages curiosity and a love for learning.
Teachers also play a crucial role in the personal growth of their students. They help develop critical thinking skills, creativity, and emotional intelligence. By providing guidance and support, teachers help students navigate challenges both inside and outside the classroom, fostering resilience and adaptability.
A supportive teacher can significantly boost a student's confidence. By believing in their students' abilities and encouraging them to take risks, teachers help students build self-esteem and a sense of accomplishment. This confidence can have a lasting impact on a student's academic and personal life.
Next week, from May 5-9, we will be celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week. This is a special time to show our gratitude for the dedication and hard work of our teachers. Here are a few ways you can participate:
Encourage your child to write a heartfelt note to their teacher expressing their appreciation. These notes can be a wonderful way to let teachers know how much they are valued and the positive impact they have made.
Organize small surprises or treats for teachers to enjoy throughout the week. Whether it's a favorite snack, a small gift, or a classroom decoration, these gestures can brighten a teacher's day and show them how much they are appreciated.
Let's come together to celebrate and honor the amazing teachers who make a difference every day!
As the famous educator Henry Brooks Adams once said, "A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops."
Warm regards,
Michael Singleton

STEMpowering Women: Stories of Passion and Perseverance
My name is Shrika Velagapudi, I'm a junior at Orlando Science High School. I took up creative writing as a hobby this past summer, and recently had the wonderful opportunity to publish a nonfiction children’s book about 10 remarkable female scientists from around the globe who broke barriers and accomplished great feats in STEM. Traveling to India every summer, I was devastated to learn how many girls shared my same aspirations and dreams, but simply didn't have the resources or opportunities to bring them to fruition. This drove me to play my part as an advocate for STEM learning and overcoming systemic barriers: 100% of the profits made from my book, "STEMpowering Women", go to funding tech access and education for the millions of Indian girls living in poverty and denied opportunities.
"STEMpowering Women" is a compilation of varying women's journeys to success in the fields of STEM, as they conquer countless challenges and obstacles to prove the world wrong. Mentioned throughout this colorful, inspirational children's book are the tales and accomplishments of women scientists from all over the globe, such as Sally Ride, Antonia Novello, Marie Curie, and more. The aim of this book is to inspire young children, especially girls between the ages of 4 and 10, to take up careers in the field of STEM, and break gender barriers in this male-dominated area.
It would mean a lot to me if you all could check out my book, share with all your family and friends, or even leave a small review to bring awareness to the cause.

This week, we celebrated Orca Day with exciting rotations that highlighted our ORCA Core Values. The kids participated in engaging activities designed to build character and strengthen our classroom community. It was inspiring to see everyone working together and showing their ORCA pride!
We wrapped up the day with a high-energy PEP Rally to boost everyone’s confidence for the upcoming testing days. The cheering, laughter, and team spirit reminded us all that with effort and support, we can achieve great things!
As we begin preparing for our upcoming test, we are so proud of how hard our students are working! Our goal this week is to build confidence, reinforce skills, and most importantly, make learning engaging and fun.
In Reading, we are strengthening key skills to help students become thoughtful and confident readers. Our focus includes understanding story structure, monitoring and clarifying as we read, exploring elements of poetry like rhythm and rhyme, and practicing how to retell stories with important details in the correct order.
These skills not only deepen reading comprehension but also prepare students for upcoming assessments.
In Math, we just wrapped up an exciting unit on geometry. Students have been identifying and analyzing 2-D and 3-D shapes, composing new shapes from smaller ones, and spotting shapes in everyday objects like boxes, balls, and traffic signs. Second Grade News
What a fun and meaningful week we’ve had in second grade! Before the pep rally on Wednesday, students participated in classroom rotations where they learned more about our ORCAS core values:
O – Ownership for my actions
R – Respect myself and others
C – Caring for my community
A – Appreciate differences
S – Strive for excellence
Each rotation helped us explore what these values look like in action, and how we can show them every day at school. Then, we kept the excitement going with a high-energy pep rally to get ready for state testing! The cheers, games, and school spirit reminded us all to try our best and support one another.
As we head into testing, please help your child by making sure they get plenty of rest each night and arrive to school on time. We’re ready to shine!
