Hanover Street School Newsletter
March 20, 2024
Let me start by saying again how much I appreciate the outpouring of support and positive emails regarding Friday. Monday was truly a regular day for the students. As I walked the building I saw the third graders running around their classrooms and checking their leprechaun traps, students learning how to play pickleball in the gym, and all of the usual morning activities. Many of our younger students continue to ask me if they can have a long sing again. Thank you for the difficult conversations that I'm sure many of you had to have with your older children. They arrived at school calm and ready for the new week.
Please continue to reach out to me with any concerns and questions,
Leah Wheelan, Principal
News
Early Dismissal Tomorrow, Thursday - 12:30
We will dismiss walkers and car riders out front from 12:30 to 12:45. Since the high school will still be in session, parking will be limited. If possible, you might want to walk or carpool (Delegate your students if they are going home with a different adult). Please be particularly careful driving and parking as there will be a lot of people.
The buses will leave here between 12:30 and 12:45.
No School on Friday and Monday
We do not have school on Friday because it is a parent teacher conference day. There is also no school on Monday as all of the staff will be participating in professional learning.
Report Cards
You should be able to view your child's report card in Alma today.
Soup Week is Amazing
Thank you to the PTO for organizing and to all of you for cooking wonderful soup for the staff. Today is the last day and everyone here has been so happy when they walk in the staff room and smell all the delicious soups. It couldn't have come at a better time!
Reading Week Recap
We had a wonderful reading week earlier this month. The author's visit by Ryan Higgins was a highlight. The students gathered in the gym to hear him read and watch him create an illustration in real time. He was fabulous with our students.

News from the Nurse
Conjunctivitis/Pink Eye
People get watery, itchy, crusty eyes for all kinds of reasons . . . viral infection, bacterial infection, or allergies. I am seeing many cases of pink eye in our school. Should your child get diagnosed with BACTERIAL CONJUNCTIVITIS, your child may return to school after being on the prescribed medication for 24 hours. Otherwise, children may attend school as long as they are comfortable.
Please read the LSD updated COVID Policy
The Lebanon School District has some standard health guidelines in place for the safety of its students. If a student has a fever of over 100.0 degrees Fahrenheit or is experiencing vomiting or diarrhea, they must remain at home for at least 24 hours after the symptoms have resolved without the use of medication. The school district has recently updated its COVID-19 guidelines in accordance with the latest recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The guidelines now follow the latest protocols for respiratory viruses such as COVID-19, RSV, and Flu. The CDC recommendations no longer require isolation for five days after testing positive for COVID-19. Furthermore, one does not have to wear a mask for days 6-10 after testing positive. However, it is still strongly advised that students stay at home if they feel unwell (cough, sore throat, runny/stuffy nose, sneezing, etc.) and mask for five days after symptoms improve or the fever ends. Finally, the Lebanon School District encourages all students to stay up-to-date on their recommended vaccinations.
Why is it so important for kids to eat breakfast?
We know that children who have a healthy breakfast before school perform better. They can pay attention longer and it improves their ability to problem solve. Mornings are BUSY before school but there are some quick, easy, inexpensive and DELISH breakfast ideas below:
Container of yogurt (add granola or other cereal on top)
Small tortilla with peanut butter - wrap it up and enjoy
String cheese
Try making a smoothie experimenting with delicious combinations such as yogurt, oat milk, coconut water, frozen fruit, bananas and maybe even some peanut butter
Other good news . . . if you have a busy morning and your child does not have time for breakfast, HSS serves breakfast every morning. All children are welcome!!
In good health,
