Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Wow—what a fantastic start to the school year! The smiles and joy of returning to school have been evident all week. Students adjusted well to the new routine of getting up, preparing themselves, and engaging in a full day of learning.

I hope to see you all tomorrow, Tuesday, September 9th at our first PTO meeting from 6–7 p.m. in the Gatewood Media Center. During the meeting, I will share last year’s data successes, highlight our 2025–26 Title Plan, discuss programming emphases for this school year, and answer any questions you may have. Please consider joining our PTO—your voice is important to Gatewood’s success.

We are also excited to share that Gatewood will be offering a new opportunity for students called Gator Academy! This extended learning day program is designed to provide additional support in reading, math, and social-emotional learning in a smaller, focused setting. Students invited to Gator Academy will begin their school day at 7:50 a.m. and will benefit from targeted instruction and support before the regular school day begins. We believe this extra time will strengthen skills, build confidence, and create a strong foundation for success.

📅 Gator Academy will officially begin on Monday, September 15th.

Families of students invited to participate in Gator Academy will receive both an email and a letter invitation. Participation requires returning a signed permission form before students can attend.

We are currently finalizing program details, and we are working toward having targeted services busing available by mid-October to ensure access for families.

Arrival & Dismissal Procedures:

Beginning September 15th, when leaving Gatewood after arrival and dismissal, all drivers will be asked to turn right onto Gatewood Drive between 9:00–10:00 a.m. and 4:00–5:00 p.m. and then follow the road in the neighborhood and exit north of the Gatewood campus. Staff will be available during these times to help direct traffic flow. Please see the traffic flow map below.

As a reminder, students may not enter the building until 9:20 a.m. If they arrive before that time, they will need to wait in the vestibule area (between the entry doors and the inner building doors) until 9:20 a.m.

We are thrilled to bring Gator Academy and these exciting opportunities to Gatewood students and look forward to partnering with you to support their learning.

Warmly,

Dr. George Nolan, Principal

The month of September Gatewood is focusing on the PYP Learner Profile Trait of caring. Watch this video and hear from a few Gatewood students what being caring can look like.

Here are a few ideas for how you make connections at home:

  • Talk with your students about ways you can show kindness or brainstorm names of people you know that might need a little extra care.
  • Encourage compassion and empathy by asking your student "What do you think that person might be upset about? How would you feel if you were in that situation?"
  • Be creative in how you care for the environment or reduce your environmental impact. Consider planning for a garden, compost, or trash pickup.
  • Discuss and celebrate ways you already care for self, others, and the environment. Modeling these things to children is a great practice!

Hopkins Bus Pass Policy

All requests for guest/friend bus passes must be pre-approved by the Transportation Department. With increasingly full vehicles, transportation must first ensure there is appropriate room for an extra scholar. Please request a bus pass from the Gatewood Office at least one day before the desired ride. It is NOT guaranteed there will be space on the bus. If it is approved, the Transportation Department will send a bus pass to the school for your child.

Call the Gatewood Office phone at 952-988-5250 to request a bus pass.

Dear Teacher Letter

One of the most important partnerships is those between caregivers and their child's teacher. One of the ways we create belonging in Hopkins is by knowing each scholar as an individual. You can help us get to know your child by completing this "Dear Teacher" letter. If this format doesn't work for you, that's okay! An email, a handwritten letter, or a conversation during back-to-school nights or conferences is just as valuable.

No-Food Birthday Celebrations 🥳

Gatewood Elementary works to follow the District Wellness Policy (Code 533), in which all of Hopkins Schools have a responsibility to help students establish and maintain lifelong, healthy eating habits. We want to promote a positive learning environment by providing healthy celebrations that shift the focus from food to the child. Additionally, many of our students have allergies or dietary restrictions, which prevent them from participating in food-related celebrations.

All of this leads us to creating No-Food Birthday Celebrations. Gatewood is eliminating any food and beverages brought as birthday treats. Many other schools in our District and surrounding districts have already made this change with great success. Individual teachers will decide on age-appropriate ways to recognize birthdays within the classroom. 🎉

Contact Transportation at schoolbus@hopkinsschools.org if you need to...

  • Change/update your address, if not correctly reflected on your students file (per Infinite Campus/Parent Portal).

  • Change or request a Bus Stop, noting that you need to fall into the Bus Zone boundaries to be able to request a stop. Bus Stop Requests will take time to be finalized, a backup plan to get to/from school maybe needed in the interim.
