Math (Mrs. Jordan)

What have students been learning about in Math 8 class?

Students have completed the unit on Square Roots, Cube Roots and Comparing Real Numbers on Oct. 28th. We have started our unit on Solving Equations in One Variable. Students must show all of their work when they are solving equations. We have gone over the process of showing work for equations during each class. Students should continue to work on their Weekly Stickers, by the end of the Trimester Math 8 students should have 800 stickers.

Civics (Ms. Costello)

After a quick introduction to elections, we started our rights unit in Mid-October. We’re discussing why rights matter, and how we can teach others about them. Students learned about events during the American Revolution that sparked concerns about rights, how rights are protected in the Bill of Rights, and how it’s the job of the government to protect rights. We wrote a letter to ‘break up with Great Britain’ and soon will discuss moments of rights violations, how rights have evolved over time, and how rights apply in schools. Students will work in teams in this unit to create something that can teach others about a specific right and why rights matter. You might ask your child:

  • I heard you are learning about rights in civics class. What’s one interesting thing you’ve learned or read about related to rights?

  • I understand you wrote a break-up letter in your civics class. Who broke up? How does this relate to your lessons on rights?

  • I understand you are doing a project in this unit. Who are you working with? What right are you focusing on?

English (Ms. Dion)

October in 8th Grade English

In English class this month, students have been uncovering what makes a story tick—analyzing plot points, conflicts, and themes in a range of children’s books, from lighthearted tales to deeper, more reflective stories. Ask your student which book they explored and what message they discovered!

Science (Miss Beaupre)

This month in science class, students have been diving into our first OpenSciEd unit: Unit 7.1 – Chemical Reactions & Matter. We've been exploring questions like What happens when substances interact? and How do we know a chemical reaction has occurred?

So far, we've completed Lessons 1–12, where students have been engaging in hands-on investigations, analyzing data, and building models to better understand the properties of matter and how substances change during chemical reactions.

Students have been doing a great job using evidence to support their thinking and making connections between what they observe and the science behind it.

We’ll be reviewing soon and preparing to take our unit test.
