"All The Places You'll Go!"
A Note from Principal Byrd's Desk π
Dear EXCEL Academy Families,
Can you believe it? We have just 13 exciting days left of the school year! As we count down to summer break, we're buzzing with upcoming events, celebrations, and important learning experiences.
Get ready for a busy and memorable end to the school year!
A Look at What's Ahead!
We have a packed schedule designed to celebrate our students' achievements and provide enriching opportunities:
- Promotions & Moving Up Ceremonies: We're so proud of our promoting students! Get ready to celebrate their hard work and achievements as they prepare for their next academic adventures. Specific details regarding dates, times, and logistics for each grade level's ceremony will be shared directly with the relevant families.
- Field Trips & Special Experiences: Our students are looking forward to a few more engaging field trips and on-campus special events. These hands-on opportunities are invaluable for reinforcing learning and creating lasting memories.
- End-of-Year Celebrations: From classroom parties to school-wide recognition, we'll be taking time to acknowledge the growth and success of all our Eagles throughout the year. Details on specific classroom celebrations will come directly from your child's teacher.
In addition, please ensure that students are adhering to the district's Student Rights & Responsibilities Handbook. Failure to do so may prohibit scholars from participating in our end-of-year celebrations or field trips.
Love,
Principal Byrd

Exciting Opportunity: STEM Field Trip to Howard B. Owens Science Center!
Dear EXCEL Academy Families,
I am incredibly excited to announce a fantastic, last-minute opportunity for our students across various grade levels to visit the Howard B. Owens Science Center (HBOSC)! This will be an unparalleled chance for our scholars to engage in immersive, hands-on science learning experiences that directly align with the Next Generation Science Standards and enrich the Prince George's County Public Schools curriculum.
The HBOSC staff are renowned for their dedication to providing truly engaging and enriching educational programs. Due to the unique nature of this opportunity and its direct alignment with our curriculum goals, this field trip is exempt from Administrative Policy 6153, Administrative Procedure 6153 (See Section H).
These in-person field trips will take place on-site at the newly renovated Howard B. Owens Science Center. Each session will be two hours in length, offering a focused and impactful learning experience.
We understand that this is short notice, and we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. However, this was an opportunity we felt was too valuable to miss for our students, and we wanted to afford them this incredible hands-on science experience.
Here are some important details:
- Lunch: Students may pack a lunch to bring with them. Alternatively, a school-bagged lunch will be provided for all participating students. Students will have the opportunity to eat their lunch at the Science Center.
- Specific Date(s) and Grade Levels: You will receive a separate communication very soon with the specific date(s) for your child's grade level and any necessary consent forms. Please look out for this vital information.
We believe this experience will significantly enhance our students' scientific understanding and curiosity. Thank you for your flexibility and continued partnership in providing rich learning opportunities for our EXCEL Academy scholars.
Sincerely,
Principal Byrd
*More grade levels may be scheduled depending on the logistics and time slots available. Stay tuned.

A major focus of the Schmidt program is the fifth-grade overnight visit. All PGCPS schools are provided with the opportunity to visit either the Schmidt Center or Hard Bargain Farm (Alice Ferguson Foundation). Schools coming to Schmidt are assigned an Instructional Specialist who works with the school in developing a schedule of activities. The activities include, but are not limited to, Stream Ecology, Dropping in on Deer, Orienteering Challenge, Woodland Ecology (Nature Walk), Team Building, Problem Solving and the Confidence Course (upon having trained staff from the school). Evening activities include a wagon ride and campfire. The activities taught at the Schmidt Center complement and enhance the existing curriculum and are aligned to Common Core, NGSS, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and Environmental Literacy.
